I am so glad I found this thread as I thought it was only us who thought that Brighton Marina was a shabby shambles. We arrived here in October initially for the winter, hoping to head back to Chichester, our favourite marina for the summer.
However having secured a year long job in London and loving the life in Brighton itself, we decided to take out an annual berth. As a liveaboard there, I would like to add to some of the frustrations mentioned here.

Firstly though in defence of dog owners (and we have cats so no favouritism here)….The picture of the sch!t……that’s not dog poo – it’s swan poo. At the moment there are about six swans living around West Jetty. They are lovely to look at but make a LOT of mess! It does get hosed down daily we think, but seems to return with alarming regularity.
I must say in the 7 months we have lived at West Jetty, we’ve seen many dogs but no dog poo at all, except once on the ramp towards the boardwalk. In fairness that could be anyone’s dog as it’s a public area. In general, owners do keep their dogs on leads and seem to look after them.

The picture of the overflowing bin was and is not an isolated incident. This happens very often. Over Easter the bins on West Jetty near the gents loos overflowed and were eventually removed……but not returned for over 24 hours! During this time and with absolutely no other bin in the vicinity, bags of rubbish were piled high. We felt like we were living in a rubbish dump! Staff really didn’t seem to care at all.
The trolley situation is really bad. We’ve had a trolley dumped on our finger pontoon right by where we get off the boat. This really annoys me. Why on earth can’t people just return them to the bays? We were told new trollies had been ordered but these all seem to be on the East Jetty (which is a lot cleaner IMHO) so we have to run the gauntlet of Asda trollies instead which are also just dumped on the pontoons…..
The showers are ok if you get the right cubicle……the water is hot enough, but you have to dance about to get any coverage in some of the cubicles. Compared to Chichester or Port Solent they are downright poor. A broken hairdryer took 6 months to be replaced.
………talking of broken appliances….laundry! There are two washers and two dryers – I say two but since January there has been just one dryer on the West Jetty. A notice informs us that a replacement has been ordered yet this hasn’t arrived and it’s now 4 months later. Considering the amount of liveaboards and weekend visitors I think they should be a bit more proactive here.

Staff are hit and miss. Sarah has been lovely but some staff are just downright rude and surly. A shame because the attitudes of some staff are tarring the rest with the same brush (a bit like the attitudes of some liveaboards ;) )

I hope the OP’s correspondence with the CEO results in getting something done to improve the hygiene, facilities and general attitude of those in charge.

Premier are also starting another money making scheme this week. They recently wrote to berth holders (well in the Portsmouth area at least) asking berth holders to inform them when they had contractors working on their boats so they could check their credential, insurance and advise on Health and Safety [All very laudable]. What they forgot to mention (until questioned) was the fact they are going to charge the contractors for the privilege of being on their site. When questioned they informed me other marinas already do this, but the one thing I do know is where the contractor is going to pass on this extra charge to, me.

On the subject of money making, Brighton are stopping the taking in of post for berth holders as at 31st May. If you want mail sent to the marina you have to 'register' which i've been told will cost £25 (per month one of the locals said but i haven't confirmed this at the office). If you don't register, all your incoming post will be returned to sender.

I only wish it were......we have concert tickets being delivered (probably in June/July) and now we're going to have to get our postal address changed to my husband's work.

There's a B-I-G laminated card in every letter box in the office, just in case anyone misses it!

We wondered if it's being done to comply with a council request to try and find out who lives at the marina and should therefore be paying council tax?

The weird thing is that the announcement was only made AFTER everyone has paid their annual berthing fees (not that i'm cynical)

Here you go, straight off the Premier Marinas Brighton website.......note the words "just" £25 per month and they don't mention the lovely "we shall return to sender" bit either!

"Mailbox Rental
Brighton Marina offers Berth Holders the opportunity to have their post delivered to their own dedicated mailbox in the marina office for just £25 per month. There is a one-off registration fee of £10 for this service. Parcels can also be held for £1 per item, per day."

Have they offered any explanation for Thai £25pm charge? That's a nice little earner for them!

That would imply that there was actually some justification for it  ...

With the amount of residential boats there its probably a big job each day for someone to sort out the mail, whilst doing that other duties can get neglected, I think its fair to make a charge or suggest Royal Mail deliver to each boat, don't think they would do it.

In view of Premier Swanwick recent experience of a serious boat fire, albeit on that occasion caused, I understand, by a careless owner, it is surely not unreasonable that they check the working credentials of those working in their premises, and as they and those they are charging are all commercial businesses why shouldn't they levy a reasonable fee, after all they presumably have to employ someone suitably qualified to read and vet the Risk Assessment & Method Statements of the various firms on site.

Also if it were my business premises and one of my clients turned up with their own contractor to do my specialist work in my premises I am not sure i would simply hold the door open for them !

Most commercial buildings nowadays have complex 'Permit to work' systems to ensure such practices are adequately controlled for the general safety of all building users. I can't see it being too long before the relatively relaxed Marine Industry catches up.

I suppose the question then becomes what constitutes 'reasonable', and can the Health & Safety Policia be kept reasonably in check, otherwise every finger berth will end up with a fence around it.

We were always much more self contained and would use the HM pontoon, a buoy, or anchor.

Visiting marinas was very unsocial places. We had a grandmas trolley for carting stuff about, much easier than trailing off, trying to find the last long lost marina trolley.

Of course if you insist on an all electric boat, I suggest you buy a very long cable.

It was quite useful having packages delivered to the Marina.
What the other half didn't see etc.
Being a previous Gosport Premier customer we were seriously considering moving back there next year. (2 boats.)
The enlightenment as a result of this thread means Premier our unlikely to see that £12k.

We have berthed with three south coast marina companies over our boating life and to be fair to them all, they have an impossible task making their offering perfectly match each individual berth holders requirements.

Some berth holders want peace and quiet and relax from a hard week earning enough to pay for the peace and quiet they crave, others want to use their boat like a garden shed and have every power tool available in the Argos catalogue onboard, others want to use their boat as their main residence and therefore need the marina to provide the benefits that a land based house provides.

Putting all those requirements into the mix means that not everyone will be happy with the outcome.

However, and being blunt, if you have a problem with your marina just walk up to the office and have a conversation with the manager and ask them to sort it out, if that doesn't work, speak to the next tier up in the chain. While I maybe can understand the frustrations, there seems little point in coming on here and telling us all about it before talking to the marina.

I know this post will not make me many friends but from experience most marinas will go out of their way to sort an issue if it is presented to them in a calm and constructive manner.

Have a great weekend,
Paul.

Don't you think I didn't?! the duty manager walked in front of me seeing what I could see, and telling me all the story which I wrote here - so to be fair to myself nothing I could have done whilst I was there being nearly 70miles away from home berth...

On a positive note, I also received a phone call from the marina manager last week - and in addition to apology, the confirmed new trolleys and extra cleaners are sorted to maintain the standard. Which seems to be a good thing to me.

I've been trying to get in touch with Swanwick for 3 days re: a visitors berth on Saturday night whilst we visit the magnificent British boat builders show. Tried calling initially but that just ended up with me hanging on the automated phone system for an operative or some such person.

Thought an email might work but sadly no response, just emailed again so let's see what tomorrow brings :)

There does seem to be a bit of a theme.

I have to say in 10 years at Haslar I can't think of too many problems - bar a security issue bringing a Chinese take away onto the pontoons without appropriately trained delivery agent :) :). The management there are very easy to get hold of and any issues get resolved but pontoons are great (the Swanwick splinters still hurt), the trollies are replaced regularly and general investment seems to keep pace with wear and tear.

The berth holders bash has never been the same since the hog roast was retired but we've got the amazing British boat builder's show instead this weekend (hopefully we can find a berth !!

Henry I could write a book about swanwicks way of business over the last few months but I'm going to save it for the moment until this contractors blackmail fee is fully explained. I'm afraid your phone calls take about a week to be answered, things should get back to normal when the new office is finished but for now the staff are having to work inside a shoe box, there is no wonder your calls are missed.

I hadn't realised they were working out of a shoe box, it did seem odd as the previous office had plenty of people within reach of a phone.

I have now heard back from them and all is well for Saturday which pleases me. I look forward to the show.
