Jest went too my Honwave T40 on a trailer with the Mercury 20 hp 4 stroke carb model tiller steer on it. The petrol had been in the tank since October last year. I have not touched the engine since October last year, The impeller has been in for over 5 years and it once sat for 2 years doing nowt in the shed.

Squeezed the bulb three times, Pulled the pull cord 3 times and it started and ticked over and revved a dream. Pumped water fine just as it did last year.

All good. I will not be wasting my time, Money and the worlds resources on that this season.

But of course the sky will fall in, The oil will be full of sulphates, The impeller will be on the brink of destruction, The RNLI will have to be called out and I suspect the world would sink further into the abis.

If it aint broke don't Break it I say

Your engine, your choice. As you say it all works OK today.
But if you want some reliability out at sea..........

I would change the impeller. If that fails you have a dead, possibly damaged engine if you don't spot it soon enough. Very old oil and it just wears a bit faster.

'The object of maintenance is to replace things before they fail, . . .

. . . but only just before !'

(Royce Creasey, referring to vintage motorcycle ownership)
I agree but when my impellers on my many many outboards last for over 5 years why on earth would you replace them every year like so many people do. Ther all know the the impeller they take out is as good as the one they put in

I simply share my true experiences in this regard and people simply can’t seem to cope and offer no real factual evidence in reply

Whilst I am not a fan of wasting resources I am less of a fan of breaking down at sea or at the very least ruining a day out on a river. The impeller blades could be cracked and on the verge of giving up the ghost. I can only assume BP isn't bothered about these scenarios, in which case fill yer boots!

I don't replace impellers every year but I at least pull them and have a look, and carry spares.

Interesting that you can’t seem to accept facts based on empirical evidence and the truth

But you have offered no evidence? Only that the engine starts and pumps water?

Tell you what, do a youtube video of you removing the impeller from this engine and showing it is in excellent condition with no cracking, stiffening or risk of failure. Also, send oil samples away and share the results.

No cheating now 😘

And maybe a couple of hours use, offshore.

I did replace the impellor every year on my honda 30 as I don't want to find it gives up mid channel. Whilst I carry spares, changing the impellor afloat isn't a 10 minute job more like 2 hours as there is a worry about dropping a bolt ....

What's the rough cost on your engine, out of interest?
