Selling old boats for free

boatsandoutboards.co.uk and apolloduck are the two main ones...

For your Kestrel, you can also try Gumtree and Preloved.co.uk
You local newspaper may also have an online freeads.

on the 'for sale' part of this forum if the boat is FREE. or on the 'for sale' part of this forum until 'full circle' or some other person reminds you its against the rules ;)

actually I enquired about the boat.

So it isnt me Guv.

The boat was 400 quid, which in my mind makes it an allowable sale in the for sale.

I object when people stuff Twisters for £££££££ on there for instance.
Eh, Mr?

Seems fair enough to me too - nobody's going to pay £40 for an advert in PBO for a £400 boat, so they're not losing the ad revenue. But it's their ball, so they get to say who can play with it.

Pete

IIRC the wording of the rule quoted by Snooks was "No LINKS to boat ads" rather than don't advertise your boat under £400 - cos lots of people put tenders & dinks up for sale without the Fuhrer throwing a wobbly.

So it goes. Why would we expect any commonsense anyway?

I believe the OP has an old boat he is trying to get rid of. I don't want to put words in his mouth, but if you genuinely can take it away you might just find it is.

Pete

I'm getting a few inquiries to view her as a whole so hav'nt decided what to do yet.If the worst comes to the worst she could be available stripped to the bare essentials but sailable away for nothing yet.
Can't help eying many of the good quality fittings that could be useful to a replacement watch this space.

On the free sites, you could also put links to your own website with an ad' for your boat

e.g. www.sailingscotty.com

My website constructed by my daughter attracted over 2000 hits and sold in 8 weeks for the asking price minus half the cost of a new Monitor wind vane, as the new owner didn't wish to have the one on the boat.

It meant that I sold the boat without using an agent, using RYA forms and to speed things up I had my own survey done and made that available to serious callers for free.

Thanks for the info. What's RYA forms?

Just stick RYA Bill Of Sale into Google
This was at the top of the page.......... http://www.anchormarinesurveys.co.uk/Downloads/RYABILLOF SALE.pdf

You need to exchange that form or if not an RYA member and you feel guily for using it, draw up your own similar Bill of Sale.
With other proof of ownership e.g. the Bill of Sale if you had one when you bought the boat or a receipt for originally buying the boat, the boats registration if it has one e.g. SSR or Code 1. that should be enough.

That appeared to be as simple as it need be.

If the boat is not registered, some proof of ownership to exchange with the Bill of Sale seems to be important.
Although no proof of ownership, I did get my boatyard to witness my Bill of Sale with the buyer present and as I'd been at the yard for 6 years, it was a fair chance that I was the owner.

Also showing all paperwork regarding the boats history with me such as insurance certificates, receipts etc.. seemed a good idea.

I again stress the fact that I had a survey done on the boat so that the prospective buyers could have that. It seemed to bring greater interest along with lots of pictures etc on the website. My eventual buyer actually used the survey for his own insurance purposes.

One final tip when selling your boat.... buyers do not like other peoples dirt. The boat should be immaculately clean in every corner, inside and out.
Many packets of Tescos baby wipes and kitchen rolls I found worked well in many areas inside.

While it might be useful to have your own survey (as a seller) so that you know what faults there are and can set your asking price accordingly, it is unwise for a buyer to rely on that. The surveyor has no responsibility to the buyer, who should have his own survey as part of satisfying himself that the boat is as described.
