Selling old boats for free

and finally, a pedant writes.

You can't sell anything that's free, you can sell something for £££, swap, w.h.y. etc, and if it's free it's not "for free" because it's an oxymoron, it's just free.

I never understand advertisers in particular, paying zillions per column cm, writing "for free" when there is no circumstance I know where the word "for" can have any purpose in this context.

But do ignore this post, everyone else will.

I have bought and sold boats in the sub-20ft and sub-£2K bracket many times and never had anything more than a receipt.
Bill of Sale is a bit overkill at this end of the market.

I fear you have missed the point. OP was actually looking to ADVERTISE it at nil cost, its price was actually £400, which, whilst clearly a bargain, is not even close to being free.

Boats and Outboards sold my Halcyon 23 for just under £4k in a few days after two insertions in PBO produced no replies at all. I don't think PBO attracts the lower end of the boat buying market although as a subscriber I'm definitely at the lower end of the yachting fraternity even with the newer boat!

While it might be useful to have your own survey (as a seller) so that you know what faults there are and can set your asking price accordingly, it is unwise for a buyer to rely on that. The surveyor has no responsibility to the buyer, who should have his own survey as part of satisfying himself that the boat is as described.

Ah, but if the surveyor should resurvey for the buyer, the bulk of the info is already set out and a recheck of items and areas can be achieved far quicker, therefore the resurvey costs a lot less than the original.
The survey itself takes 'x' hours the write up/photographs etc. also takes a fair amount of time.

The surveyor in my case actually did the resurvey for less than £100. Boat = Twister 28'
A surveyor will ensure that the resurvey is as good as the original. They stand to lose their livlihood if misrepresenting.

Win Win
