Planning to put boat on the market and wondered how I ensure that I am able to keep our name and transfer to the next one?

Boat is Part 1 registered if relevant.

Thanks

Nick

Don't think boat names are transferable. Could do one of these.

1 Change your existing boat name with the registrar before sale. Then register new boat with old name. Only thing here, not sure if the name would be out of use for a period before it could be used again.

2 Just call the new boat "(name) II" or "(name) III" etc.

3 If the new boat is not registered, you can call it what you like.

Suggest you phone the Registrar at the port of registry and ask them. They're very helpful.

Can't you just change the port of registry to Cast off of Cowes

or summit like that.....

Nick:
We did precisely this 3 months ago. You get all the forms off the website mentioned above. Here's the plan:

1. Wait till you are about to sell old boat, have agreed a deal I mean. As part of contract tell buyer you are keeping name.
2. Choose new name for old boat. Or invite buyer to, out of courtesy.
3. Send "change of name" form to Cardiff changing name of old boat.
4. Simultaneously send form to Cardiff registering your new boat as "Cast Off". Prior to this you will have to have it tonnage surveyed, but that's easy
5. NB Cardiff will refuse to accept item 4 until you send them a carving and marking note to confirm the new name for old boat has been carved and marked onto the old boat. However they will do this by fax, same day. Speak to them on phone to arrange this. You self-certify, they dont actually check you have carved and marked the new name onto the old boat (unless the old boat is registered commercially, in which case a surveyor has to sign the carving note, but you wouldn't do a commercial registration unless you have been boating in France or Italy)
6. When they have got items 3-4-5 they will register your new boat as Cast Off, and then you carve and mark it, return the carving note self-certified (if not commercial, otherwise, again, a surveyor must sign the carving note)

All the above is applicable where you sell and buy simultaneously, eg trade-in. If you sell, then buy later, so you have no boat for a few months, you are a bit stuck. You can change name of old boat before you sell it, steps 1-2-3-5, but I dunno if you can reserve "Cast off" for a few months while you get the new boat. You need to ask Cardiff about that. Or find a very small boat (your tender, I'll lend you one if you need, or one of the girl's toys praps) and part 1 that as Cast Off - there is no minimum size AFAIK. But this will cost a few £££ in tonnage survey and Cardiff fees.

You can register your new boat in the same name as your last providing you use a number suffix i.e Cast Off 2' or as I have done you can add 'of Solent' or wherever on the registration although in my case it has not made it yet onto the boat. Dave.

That won't do I'm afraid, I believe that to be Part 1 registered the boat has to be > 20ft and > a certain tonnage (nothing to do with weight but measurement eg number of sherry barrels etc)

Just want a change and a larger and newer craft.
