Unfortunately you can't carry them on a plane, either in check-in luggage or carry-on. The metal bulbs contain compressed gas and are deemed as hazardous material.
The manufacturers either source these bulbs locally, airfreight them in 'freight-only' aircraft (where the hazmat regs are more lenient (than pax carrying planes) or they ship by sea.
Ironically, each passenger and crew member is supplied with a self inflating lifejacket - but that seems okay!!
For a full and authoritative explanation you should contact the airline direct.

This isn't true. You are permitted to carry lifejackets and 2 CO2 cylinders according to the CAA (see the RYA pages for example).
I've never had a problem - though if you ask the airline checkin-staff they will invariably say 'no' without checking. The ICAO regs do allow it though and I always stick mine in my checked-in baggage and not mentioned it.
We're off to Greece shortly, and I just checked yesterday with the airline. What Rick says is correct - I was told I can carry one jacket and two re-arm kits per person in the hold, but not in the cabin.
Seems you are correct; you can take them on board. I was once refused, hence my reply. I also remember reading of similar experiences of refusal on this or other forums. Go for it...and I'll be taking mine in future! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
The CAA regs allow for carriage of lifejackets etc but the RYA is wise to say that you should seek the advice of the airline and get written confirmation from them, to take with you. Each airline has a different approach to this and, as already mentioned, the check in staff are unlikely to be familiar with the subject, or with the policy of the particular airline.
FWIW, I inadvertently carried 2 replacement gas cylinders in my hand luggage through security at Luton airport last year without being stopped. Shows what a sham the whole security process is
When I got my boat coded, I bought all the lifejackets in the UK and shipped them out to Majorca on DHL without any problem
Just put em in the hold baggage and obviously dont tell the check in staff. You'll be fine
Unscrew the cylinders from the LJs so that if you are unlucky (<1% chance) and they see them on X-Ray (they X Ray hold bags too, behind the scenes) and dont like them they can remove just the cylinders not the whole LJ. You can then buy new cyls at the other end for £peanuts
Did this last week. Was stopped at the departure gate in B'ham, and they had my hold luggage there, and after they checked with the airline, I was told I could take 2 cylinders in hold luggage, so I had to remove 6 from the other lifejackets before they took my luggage to the plane.
On the way back, I brought eight lifejackets, all with cylinders, on the same airline, but no one stopped me.
So, it's the airline that decides, not the CAA, the security staff or the baggage handlers. Some airlines allow lots, most allow 2, and some allow none. However, they have to spot them first, so may be worth the risk. Worst case you have to buy new cylinders at the other end.
