News from Spain.
I work as a marine engineer, self employed.
Up until now, I have checked the boats I am responsible for every other day, doing essential maintenance only, with no contact with other people.
From El Pais website:-
The new measures will restrict the movement of residents in Spain for work purposes apart from those employed in the sectors of foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, veterinarians, opticians, hygiene products, the press, fuels for the automotive sector, tobacconists, IT and telecommunications vendors, pet food, internet vendors and dry cleaners. Banks will also remain operational, while motor mechanics will continue to offer a service to the freight sector, but will not be open to the general public.
At least until the 9th of April, starting the 30th.
I will make arrangements with a live aboard in the marina to keep an eye on things.
Several things spring to mind.
My accountants are my point of contact with social & tax. So far they have been operating, but with a closed door policy.
There has been information regarding help for small firms, but they said as yet, there is nothing on how to apply for it, have to wait.
If they close up shop, I can't defer my tax or social payments.
Being an optimist, I hope I am in a position to pay things when this is all over.
I think the world will he a much different place for years to come.

Yes, indeed the world is going to be a very different place for quite some time after all this. In the UK we also have the LUNACY of Brexit after the economy gets a Wipeout so sunny Spain is looking very appealing Caramba ! Hola tios que tal?

The country was struggling to be ready with most small companies not prepared or not even knowing where to start, but after the damage we’re suffering to the economy I’m sure we’re at our best to attempt such a move.

Just a small point; the time lag between goods leaving a factory in China and arriving in a warehouse here is such that we are pretty much at the point where, if you think of it as a wave travelling through the system, the trough has arrived here. Volumes arriving will pick up a bit next week. However, since we can assume that orders are falling off as Britain is in lockdown, there will be a further shortage in due course.

As a marine surveyor I haven’t had a survey enquiry in last 3 weeks, I have a dwindling number of insurance company damage claims to adjust and that’s it. Frankly coming out of this alive I will consider a good result

I'm actually saying what needs to be said. The time for slogans is long past my friend. This is turning into the economical event of the century, with repercussions that already being felt by the debacle of the UK trying to make its own respirators. These machines go through a stringent process of approval and I for one would not wish to be connected to a Dyson. I rather use a Hoover which will be as good and only should be used to clear dust. But please don’t listen to me, I’m just an Engineer, what do I know…
This is going to go on for at least a good 3 months. Pretty much kills the year for most companies as that would surpass the final ratio( look it up ) that most companies make. They will be left with no financial lever (look it up ) to face a second round of disruption to the economy. But hey Long live Sound Bites as long as people say Meeeh.
So please leave the Ideology at home when we’re discussing the economy. MONEY MEANS MONEY all the rest is bull.

I cannot understand why people are so critical of our industries abilities to make anything in this country. Just because we subbed it out in the past, does not mean that the likes of Mclaren & co are not highly accomplished engineering companies. If one tells them what they want, I have every confidence that they will get it. (& we do not need adverse comments about F1 cars breaking down thanks) Ok does it really have to be ABSOLUTELY perfect. Gear NHS normally buys meets standars that are probably way above what might be needed. Right now we only need stuff that JUST meets a standard. If it works it does not have to do anything extra. Just save a life, that is all. All the gizmos can come later. We do not really need steer to waypoint. Just steer along a compass course will do

Greg, is it not the case that every person is only in it for the money. If he can get his products made cheaper abroad he will do so. you buy your steel you say from China, because its cheaper. This thread contains nothing positive at all and is just gloom and doome. How will you and anyone get out of this mess without a bit of positivity. Each day Ive been doing something positive for the future when we can start to pull ourselves out of this mess. Ill be on my boat in July for a few weeks, so the season is not over yet. Your be busy with repairs by then. we will need to have biosecurity procedures firmly in place by then, but we will all be moving forward, (if I am still alive).
I used to say to a good friend, don't worry about the global economy, worry about your own pocket. The global economy will only recover if we do. He took no notice and drowned.

If I can get July and August in on my charter boat I would be very happy, but I'm being pessimistic and I think maybe September October will see restrictions partly lifted.
