hi, british seagull, water cooled 2 stroke, short shaft, rope start. prop says 40 minus, but looks too short.

diameter of prop looks ok, 4 bladed, but the shaft, which looks like it should have a spring drive or simmilar on it is about an inch too long. someone has also bodged it up with a bent bolt, to transmit drive.

i'm wondering if there is a different prop for this outboard or if the drive arrangement will "fill out" the shaft.

any points welcomed.

cheers,steve.

If all else fails speak to Andrew at Sheridan Marine. His no. is 01491 652085 depends on his mood how helpful he is.

Never been the prettiest engine around, but its the sort of thing that will keep going when all the others are wheezzing or given up.

Sounds about right tho, the shaft does look rather too long, but it ain't. I've got one of about '59 vintage I think, still runs and starts first pull if I put petroil mix in it.

But you'll need more than one Silver Century to get your boat up on the plane. I would reckon that it'll take at least 20 of 'em!!

For all information on Seagulls go to www.saving-old-seagulls.co.uk - John is very knowledgeable about them and very helpful.
Another site is www.britishseagull.co.uk
Oh, and they race them and make them plane in the antipodes! - see the links from saving-old-seagulls!!
(I was always a fan of seagulls until I bought a Honda 2hp - always starts; no smell or oily mess in the back of the car; no maintenance apart from changing oil yearly; no mixing 2 stroke, etc etc) but they hold their price, I sold mine for £65 without even a demo run!!

I'd rather be sailing... :)

We are talking about engines, not those pet seagulls of yours which you've trained to shit on my head! (In Pollensa!)

ok, this be the storey... bloke buys narwall 2.4 and a seagull, new. hides it in his shed, for years.... my mate buys it... does bugger all with it.... leaves engine in back garden... i comes along and steals both... then have a right go at mate, for wasting earths resources etc.... upshot, gets decent tender and outboard that looks like new.

problem.. the spring is missing from the propeller/shaft, and i need a new one. anyone got any ideas? second hand would do as it had a bolt bodged into the groove.

Look down the posts, theres an address for british seagull and one for saving-old-seagulls, they will have the spares you need, they are all fairly cheap!

That ll be the engine which always dumps 1 x carb full of two stroke all over the carboot carpet having just burnt your hands to bits after carrying the b***y thing to the car.and also putting a layer of grease all over you at the same time..

B.....y hell where did all that wash come from.
Er looks like a B....m to me.

Ah! but the smell! The patina of age! Mind you what else would you put on the back of a McNulty clinker dinghy, apart from a sculling oar! They are a pain in the bum I know, but just a little tip, turn off the petrol and run the carb dry, before humping, I always forget and dump the contents into the dinghy!

re. turn off the petrol and run the carb dry, before humping!
Is this some form of foreplay? Can't say I have come across it before!
mind you, always up for a bit of deviation.

Ahaa but how far from boat/shore do you turn off.To soon and undignify grab for oar to prevent back to where you started before getting engine going again or lots of noise with prop out of water until carb dry, with owners of posh hondas etc looking on taking piss.

B.....y hell where did all that wash come from.
