Every sailor's nightmare!

That I am finding a little reassuring as a Seago liferaft owner, not that I ever want to be in the position to use the thing :)


A story of survival.
We have always been very proud of our products but rarely get to hear of a tale of survival that our products played a pivotal part.
Chris Pearsall tragically lost his boat the Emma Rose in the Mediterranean Sea but he survived to tell the tale.

I have a 6 man canister packed SEAGO and it had it's first well overdue service last year after 12 years on the boat. It inflated properly and was in excellent condition. Now fully serviced it is back on the boat. I have no reservations about SEAGO having seen it inflated against others in the service agents shop and he was very complimentary about the quality.

Had a Seago 4 man canister for 14 years, last inflated 4 years ago and was perfect, all seams good. Well made and recommended.

At 15 years old Seago recommends the raft is withdrawn from service and replaced with new.

Probably due to the extra costs of having the cylinder hydraulic tested and refilled. Seago rafts between 10 & 15 years old can move to annual servicing.
That’s what has happened to mine after 13 years. Only offered 1 year at about £350.00 despite previous services on time, Not cost effective, so have had scrapped And bought another make as replacement.

I have a lovely unused seago in a valise dating from around 2008 which spends its winter holidays in the loft and only ventures out to its locker in summer cross channel trips (not last year though) It’s been serviced in past but now facing decision of whether to re service or replace due to age before venturing back to French ports etc so which is current make of choice -I have no objection to Seago but haven’t used etc. do I stay with seago or look further to a more expensive versions. I have read reviews but apart from various iso type reg curious to know what’s the current best buyer -no altlantic crossing planned though.

Replace, nothing wrong with the latest Seago ISO 9650 type 1 & type 2 rafts.

I don't think there is much wrong with a 2008 seago, apart from age......go and see it serviced, get an idea and assessment of condition and likely life left ? However, the cost originally would have been c. £575 plus vat. Latest ISO 9650 4 man seems to be about £750 inc vat. Probably three years to first service, how does that compare to a service cost?
That is what commercially we would have called 'dead money' but there are obvious ripostes.....

That 2008 Seago should be withdrawn from service in 2023, very unlikely a service station would touch it - I personally wouldn't.

In Australia by law all life-rafts used by commercial fishermen must be serviced annually.

How often do you service a liferaft?

The manufacturer of your life raft does have a recommended service interval. Today the most common is every three (3) years although there are still rafts which annual servicing is recommended. I am not aware of any manufacturer with a recommended interval longer than three (3) years.

I have a seago 4 man valise raft bought in 2016, it's been serviced once so probably due again and due to the sort of boating we do considering getting rid if anyone is interested in a half life one, I carry an inflatable dinghy anyway and rarely out of sight of the UK coastline.
It has lived in a dry lazarette in it's own holding box so not rattling around or chaffing.

I feel there should be a facility where you might go and try out the elderly life raft -I doubt the RNLI rent out their lovely pool with thunder and lightening but I might try it out in a swimming pool -sadly I don’t have access to a testing tank lor the money to buy a property in Bembridge with one but I just wondered if any useful charitable uses for retired rafts ? I don’t think I would buy a secondhand one though -just trying to work out differences in the 3 seago models now -one seems to have a blow up entry step as well as a ladder but who knows if worth having?
