Unfortunately ......

a certain boat marque failed in a lift by strop and crane from a South Coast Marina .......... the hull basically folded opening up the hull to deck joint ........ the boat was in as new condition before lift. The marina concerned now has banned these boats from its lift service. Unfortunately the advertising still continues that these boats are Cat A and family etc. etc.

As you can appreciate I am not at liberty to name the manufacturer ....... but the post may have triggered a memory ?

Sad but true .....>

Items 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 ........ sad but true .........

Maybe its time for vetting of boats to make sure they are suitable ........ maybe a basic set of guidelines for boat particulars to satisfy such ..... ? I know that ARC's etc. do issue guides etc. - but as far as I am aware it's more on boat size ...... not its design.

Maybe I'm wrong ????

ARcs ........

But arn't most boats bloody miles from each other ?????? The boat is sinking from a hole in its stern ...... its a US piece of **** and sinking anyway .......

Sorry but the logic of abandonment and seeking assistance from another ----- I agree, but scuttling ....... Ok but of course we are not there to witness / see the situation .....

Re: Scuttled but Long

Interesting post; I somewhat agree with paying for rescue or at least being held responsible, the best seamen in the world are not immune to possibly needing help, a quick totally hapless situation I can think of was the Robertson family who wrote ‘survive the savage sea’ when killer whales barged and sank their vessel.

Maybe a committee (yuk) could be set up to decide negligence and whether or not the skipper of rescued vessel should cough up.

I was on the lifeboat for a good few years and one thing that is probably common to all lifeboat stations around the country>

Guys go fishing/sailing/speed boating whichever lovely sunny day F3 excellent visibility etc, at 1500 their gear/engine fails and they set about trying to get it going. at 2300 the wind is getting up, they are starting to get cold. At 0030 they start to panic and call for help. The lifeboat or rescuing vessel must now go out into foul weather and search for crew who are starting to get hyperthermia.

At which point do you think the lifeboat crew would have preferred to go and get them. This is also potentially the problem when it comes to paying for rescue, people will wait till the last possible moment to call in for help.

This is such a difficult area, I don't want to see people die from stupidity, but also I don't want to have to pay for theirs by having to start being licensed, and you can bet as soon as we have to hold a licence there will be an annual charge and and....

Already we are by law expected to keep a log and passage plan. To the letter of the law I should have these to get to my mooring by dinghy. I used to do a lot of sea angling as a kid, we never once wrote a log and I doubt all the angling vessels leaving for a days fishing are doing so now either.

In reply to an early post I was not offended, far from it, I enjoy debate, I maybe came in to strong, for that I am sorry.

I think someone else has said on here that driving licences do not make safe drivers, I wonder what the answer is, the biggest problem as I see is that it is the competent people at sea who are the ones doing the courses or not taking the risks. They are not stupid enough to believe they can not learn something new. I do the courses, but I disagree that said courses should be a requirement. I am going to repeat the yachtmaster so I can go along with my partner and we can do it together, I have forgotten so much it will be worth it. Will it be possible to stop incompetent people putting to sea, this I doubt?
