I'm looking for a reprint of a test report from Yachting World of 1959 for a Saxon class yacht. I've been in touch with Y.W. They are not able to help as I don't know which month it was published. If anyone can help, it would be most appreciated.
Thanks.
Spider.

Contact the IPC Yachting titles' Copy Shop, a photocopy service for back articles and tests. They will have a list of all boat tests done by YW and be able to supply a copy for a small (£3.50) fee. Tel: 01202 440 832 and ask for Myra Hobbs

Saxon test report

I went to a concert at which Saxon were the support band, about 12 years ago. My ears are still ringing - one of the loudest I ever heard. Not very good, either.

They were supporting Robin Trower, unfortunately the only time I have managed to see him live. Brilliant!

In praise of older....

laptops. Absolutely nothing to do with Saxon, but, I fitted an SSB set for navtex and weatherfax on an ancient laptop and before doing so searched all the posts here and your experience with both "old" laptops and the infamous Icom were lessons learned. Did your laptop charge ok from the boats 12v? Mine seems to do so at the moment but....

ps I went to Rolling Stones concert in Isle Of Man in 1966 (2nd act after Ivy Benson on her organ) and got deafened...plus ca change

Re: In praise of older....

Yes, it ran OK on the 12 volts. I had a problem with a later cable which was longer but undersized, it ran OK during operation of the laptop but overheated during the hard drive operation on shutdown and melted the insulation. That was the final straw - I gave up on the Icom and weatherfax after that. Have you had any more success?

My old laptop has been replaced by a fairly recent one, but is still in service by my wife for household accounts. Runs fine so long as we have no expectations regarding big, new software.

Saw the Stones here in The Hague a couple of years ago, outdoors. It absolutely p***ed down throughout, ruined a good leather coat, but the band were excellent. Jagger was out in the rain for the whole concert, changed shirts a few times but never lost enthusiasm - a real showman.

Ivy Benson's not a name that comes up often now, is it?

Re: In praise of older....

Dear old Ivy...she could only play where there was a "real" air blown organ. No electronics around then. But when did you see her...her star shown brightly in the west?

Anyway, decided to spend as little as pos in case twas too ambitious. Nasa HF3M+active aerial+MSDOS laptop & new battery at £50+ shareware navtex prog + bit of joinery to fit on boat. Nasa has simple interface not demodulator into serial port. Knew from your exp that v. difficult to get Windows 95 etc to grab hold of serial port correctly but Windows 3.1 works well. Can get 518 & 490khz Niton + Oostende + Corsen (last two occasionally & only during the day presumably because they increase power from 250 to 1000w). Weatherfax from Northwwod ok (again better during day at 8040 or 11086khz) but Offenbach too faint though RTTY ok but too long wait for bit you're interested in as it does whole of Europe. All has to be done manually and waving active aerial about until get best position when it might get screwed in - boat looks like a Russian spy trawler. No fancy frequency shifting. Power consumption of Nasa is 2 watts & laptop (v. pleasing) 10 watts so can leave it on a little bit. Think I've been lucky or boat earthing system fundamentally sound.

Re: In praise of older....

I decided to give up on the SSB Weatherfax transmissions, as this does seem to be yesterday's technology and the demise of the Bracknell service seemed to be the writing on the wall. When the time comes I will probably go for downloading from Internet via some sort of comms satellite, but no need for a decision for two years.

I can't claim to be an Ivy Benson fan, but my wife spent every summer holiday from age 1 to 20 at Blackpool, so naturally she has some fond memories.

They have bound sets of all the yottimags back to 1906 or so; just drop in to Limehouse Dock and riffle through until you find 1959, then photocopy it (a nominal charge is made for the photocopier). I found the YM Jan 1938 review of my boat!

This assumes that you are a CA member, but then anyone who owns or wants a sensible boat like a Saxon surely must be?
