Decided to go sailing yesterday.
Had a great day out, not overly much wind but enough to push her along at 5.8 under main and jib. Stopped just north of the power station to try to set up the auto pilot, then came back under jib alone at about 2.5 kts. Quiet beer coming back and hardly touched the wheel - who really needs the atuo pilot.
Perfect day then looked at the weather forecast back in the North of Scotland and thought oh dear must be coming up to a public hol.
Still if its any consulation we had a wonderful day.

Just had a fantastic day's sailing today (Saturday) up here in the N. of Scotland - 15-20 knots of wind, flat water, sunshine, good company (the 2nd Scottish Vega Gathering) and the added interest of sailing through the sounds of Luing, Easdale and Cuan with a bit of friendly competition - all rounded off with a few pints of good beer in the Tigh an Truish. It's twice as good when it's snatched from the jaws of weather hell.

Mind you, doesn't look like we're likely to get off so lightly tomorrow . . .

- Nick

Mike Wilkes steel cat

Where did you get a steel cat from? I can't believe it can sail very well, the virtue of cats is lightness.

Three years ago I saw a huge steel sailing cat in Kiev, It looked as though it had been built by Harland and Wolfe, everything was very heavy gauge steel. I was told that it did not sail very well, although I suspected that it would have been good for ice breaking

She was built in 79 for and by a steel boat builder. He sailed her for 7 years in the Irish Sea then sold her on. She was built in that exotic place of shippng proportions called Wigan.
BTW I think you will find a cruising / livaboard plastic prout of similar dimensions has about the same weight, if Dave has topped up his booze cupboard!!!!

Re: Mike Wilkes steel cat

You may well be right. My 33ft Quest weighs in at 3.8t in cruising trim. A modern one would be half that.

What does the steel cat weigh, and how big is she. Cant be too heavy using a 9hp o/b.

<hr width=100% size=1>this post is a personal opinion, and you should not base your actions on it.

Re: Mike Wilkes steel cat

She weighed about 3.5 tons when she first came out of the water, but she was stripped bare. Mast, sails infact anything that could come off did. The idea being that we were going to lay her at an angle so that she would go up single track highland roads - without the polis. Did not work with the wet straps so she laid flat and we asked the polis to do the bus. They were very good I must say.
When she went back in at cruising trim she weighed about 4.5 - 5 tons and probably still weighs in about the same now.
Had her out of the water about a month ago and she did 5.8 kts coming back from the other marina. Nearly flat calm.
The other day she was doing that under sails with about 8 - 10 kts of wind. So well satisfied. She trucks along nicely. Cons are she is narrow beam and low birdgedeck but you cant have everything.
