When i went to sea professionally i sailed with a Mate from the highlands who would always add "God willing" after telling me at what time we would get to the next destination. Although a firm non believer, i cant get out of the habbit as for me now it is necessary for the safety of the vessel.

A few years ago crossing to St Malo on Brittany Ferries Bretagne, I wanted a set of Duracell batteries. The shop didn't stock Duracells because of the rabbit logo. The lower deck crew would refuse to sail if they knew Duracells were aboard!

Also when at sea, our Fishing Mate from the Broch hated mention of the red fish on board, as well as the animal that makes pork.

The chief engineer, who did not get on with him, replaced our bow-mounted weather vane with one shaped like said fish, and bought a bridge kettle with said animal on.

(And yes, we had a bow mounted weather vane for a specific purpose).
