My son has started to play Virtual Skipper 5 (free online version) and wants to buy the full version. But, we have found out that this game, full version or otherwise is basically an online game and can't be used as a stand alone game on his PC. Now seeing as we live aboard normally at anchor, this is a bit of a handicap.

So what we want to know is, what other games are out there that offer the same level of competition, graphics and big boat sailing? As he is adamant he doesn't games of a dinghy sailing nature I'm left with trying to find a downloadable offshore race game with high end graphics and loads of extras like, helm, trim, sea state and weather options.

I have Ship Simulator extremes and enjoy it, but he doesn't. So over to the panel for your suggestions.

I have VS.
I bought it, Cd, instructions and all.
Great fun.

Just been into amazon and it is available, both new and used

Sail Simulator 5, or 2010 as it seems to be named in the UK, is the same. You can sail around on your own offline, but you need to be online or at least on a LAN to race with other boats.

Sail Simulator 4 was better and you could race against computer generated opponents, but this doesn't run on Windows 7.
