Record price for an exhaust elbow?

Does it have to .The idea is to travel to distant places or just local,I am sure Bill Tilman could dry his hair then and now in the Sun and or wind🙂
I agree it doesn’t have to but I’m one of the fortunate few whose wife/partner sails with them and I’d like to keep it that way. Tillman was an autocratic maverick IIRC and if I behaved like him I’d be divorced very quickly and sailing alone.

Life’s full of choices and if we choose comfort and modern tech, why not? Years ago we sailed in leaky wet boats without GPS and electronics but wd don’t have to anymore. The fact that I’m communicating with you via a Starlink satellite is something beyond Tillman’s wildest dreams.

Yes I agree with you no doubt !Even so a sneaky thought that one could sail off to total freedom( if it existed) with just a gallon of parafina for your lighting and cooking sounds ok!

Absolutely.
This forum does seem to have a preponderance of slightly hair-shirted sailors who still think that a roller furler genoa is newfangled technology and not entirely to be trusted.

When your boat is also your home, it's not unreasonable to ask for a modicum of comfort. I wonder how many of the hair shirt skippers eschew modern technology in their daily lives ashore?

Why do you say that ,although I have not voyaged such distances I don’t complain some of our formites wear silk pajareros it’s aratherwornout criticism just because we might enschew modern amenities,I think a reliable engine is a great thing, but not being totally comfortable with electrics etc have tended towards more old fashioned systems

Ditch the engine and it will solve your outboard conundrum. There's nowt wrong with a sweep or a yuloh.
No I have had several boats and there is no doubt a reliable engine is a good thing .My 27 footer I sailed to Spain did have a seagull outboard and I used a 15 footer sweep to scull when that died so speaking from experience a good reliable diesel is a good thing.

Wow!

Admittedly mine is for.a single cylinder small engine… but £744 for the Bukh bit of metal takes the biscuit.

It takes a whole packet of biscuits!

Bukh OEM parts aren't cheap, but this particular one is outrageous. Gallingly (for those of us with DV36s or DV48s), the Bukh elbow for the DV10, DV20 & DV24, by contrast, is a relative snip at £230. Perhaps the DV36 & DV48 one is solid titanium, lovingly individually hand-crafted by Danish maidens?

Just got one for my 2QM15. Sipping and import was as much as the part from HDI Marine. Will fit it next week so looking forward to sheering bolts and drilling and tapping.................

. . . The diesel gen set also gave us 230 AC on demand. (Mrs M’s hairdryer and charging laptops etc) it all seemed to make sense to me.

She should tar her hair like a proper British sailor!

How have the traditions and standards of our noble seafaring island nation been brought so low? 😁
