For me the 10% of boats value as running cost p.a. rule has always worked out very well.
It is interesting that you describe precisely my first own boat experience in terms of cost and 'value'. My 22' Ballerina was a basket case when we bought her, and after we had sorted her we could sail her far and wide, and to many many places anything larger could not get to. For me those days of exploring and adventure are in hindsight amongst the best sailing / boating experiences I have had.
However, a 'manual flush toilet' (aka bucket), small container of cold water, several restricted headroom, and no electricity becomes tedious with age, and now the home comforts of an ensuite shower, hot and cold running water, a fridge, proper double bed, 240v systems and most importantly no tacking and getting to Weymouth in 3- 4 hours rather than a whole day (2 on the Ballerina), has massive attractions.
