If the tapered pin for the dog clutch is worn what are the symptoms?
Would the shift from forward to reverse cause a grinding sound?

If wear in these components results in the clutch not engaging cleanly then the clutch will be damaged and eventually likely to jump out of gear under high loading.
If the grinding sound you hear is the clutch failing to engage cleanly then inspect the above coponents before any damage is done to the clutch.

Correct adjustment of the control cable is also relevant.

That’s very helpful
Thanks
Does the assembly pull out together?
So there isn’t a chance of parts falling in the lower case?

Yes

Google will find you the complete parts diagram / list if you need it.

Without going into loads of googling. My Volvo 120S saildrive has done about 5000 hours & I have only ever changed the oil (every year) & the shaft seals at the bottom (3 times). Is it recommended that a similar maintenance regime is applied to the volvo drive? I am having a new engine saildrive package fitted & will shortly want to offer the old saildrive for sale. However, if it is likely to be knackered it would not be right to do so. That being said it shows absolutely no sign of any issues. The MD 2020 engine has gone caput though

Yes the unit comes out or yes parts canfall below??
Yes the unit comes out as a complete assembly

Parts should not fall, but sensible to withdraw carefully in case something is wrong/broken.

Inspection of the shifter is one of the items on the routine maintenance schedule for Yanmar sail drives. Detailed in the operators manual.

AFAIK VP do not publish separate owners manuals for their saildrives. The recommended routine maintenance is described in the engine manuals
