safety at sea

One important bit of safety equipment that you omitted is a waterproof handheld VHF and a pack of personal mini flares.

IMHO either of these 2 items may have enabled the 3 people who lost their lives in the Ouzo tragedy to survive (apart from the obvious personal EPIRB.

When going X channel I try to encourage crew to buy a pack of 10 pains mini flares.

Yes all good stuff, how about a grab bag with the right stuff in it? seems to be missing from your list

You mention fire extinguishers - the only time I have ever needed one I was on deck and the fire was between me and the appliance - NOT GOOD!. Since then (30 years have passed) and we have a BIG fire extinguisher in an easy to get at location on deck.

AND some rules like at night thou shall clip on. on board thou will wear "proper" footwear.

boring arent we!

... but I don't carry a liferaft or an EPIRB because I think there's only a very small risk of me ever needing them.

Happy you, you still can decide by yourself.
Here in Spain, thanks to our nanny state, we just have to have and maintain all this useless parphernalia.
A traditional "social regatta" - that's more of a rally than a proper regatta - from Palma to Formentera will probably no longer take place, because the new regulation would impose 4 (yessss sir, four) "assistance boats" to supervise the participants!
... In spite of every boat having the full "safety kit" including life raft, EPIRB, flares, etc.

Hysteria any one?

Any links to this new legislation - I'm racing in Spain later this year.

I'll be back tomorrow, in the mean time, you could have a look at the Real Club's site.
http://rcnp.es.
You'll find details under "Regata" / "Social Regata" / "Lista de seguridad" and "Anexo de seguridad".
But it may be different for every regatta.

Top of my list would be boom or main sheet strikes, falling down companionways, the opening of the oven door resulting in hot food spilt onto the crew member.

Yep!
Totally agree with your list.

MOB stuff, while important, tends to have much more PR than these.

Noticed the exclusion in the original list, of any firefighting gear. Is this the reason for all the evacuation gear? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
