Following the debate regarding the Royal Yachting Association on Scuttlebutt over the Christmas period the RYA's chief excutive, Rod Carr, has volunteered to appear on a ybw.com forum to answer questions.

In the first of what might turn out to be an occasional series of interviews with key boating people, we have set this pilot to run from 1600-1800GMT Tuesday 14 January. The session will be held in Eastleigh and it will be moderated by Kim Hollamby, not for any censorship reason but in order to keep some shape and clarity to proceedings.

Full details are on the forum, which is now live. To view it visit:

Or use the main index (top forum nav bar) or drop-down 'jump to' menu (foot of the page).

How ill it work Kim? Can we post questions in advance and if so where? (this thread?).
I ask because I suspect the time will be difficult for a lot of us to be there at the time, either doing the post etc or in the traffic trying to get back to nearest and dearest.

Excellent idea, Kim.

Can we start to load in questions now, or should we wait to the time?

Will you publish edited highlights of the discussion in YM?

Re: Excellent idea, Kim.

You can use the forum now. If you post questions there I'll be able to see them and it will give me a bit of a head start on what is bound to be a busy couple of hours. Once I get a feel for it I will probably publish the advance questions so that people can see what has already been asked.

In terms of publishing a precis I'll talk to the YM team about that and let you know.

We set the timing as a bit of a ham-fisted attempt at keeping all parties happy, given that a lot of users access the forums at work and that we start to see more home ISPs kicking in from about 1700 or so. Okay, so I admit, who gets to go home by six o'clock these days?

If the timing is bad for you it is possible to post your questions on the forum here anytime between now and Tuesday:

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.ybw.com/cgi-bin/forums/postlist.pl?Cat=&Board=RYA140103>http://www.ybw.com/cgi-bin/forums/postlist.pl?Cat=&Board=RYA140103</A>

and you can review the results when you get home. Also perhaps Rod will lose track of time and we'll still be busy a bit later on.

Sorry for the compromise.

No, I'm sure he works well outside of that time but he has a pretty full schedule next week and for that matter so do I, hence the date and timing. We could probably have managed a wider slot by waiting a week or two but it seemed to be something that should happen sooner rather than later.

Rod has not ruled out conducting further sessions if this one works out okay from all perspectives (ie users see it as useful as much as anything else).

OK! I believe you, and in that spirit, I'll add a questions or two in the hope that they will receive a response in my rare absence ;)

In seriousness, agree it should happen sooner rather than later. Big boil that needs lancing. I really do hope that these things become regular, with a variety of leading lights taking the floor.

John Watson? No interest personally, but I'm sure from his posts here, he'd welcome the chance to put paid to a few myths.

You'll never please all of the people all of the time - any later in the evening and there will be many thousands (according tth RYA) attending shore based theory course evening classes!

Re: RYA courses

Mine (year 2) is on a Monday and by Tuesday I am starting the homework which fizzles the brain. Generally support the RYA but couldn't give this course high marks for quality.

Just keep an eye on the forum where you posted your questions. Around 1600 onwards you should start to see the answers appearing. If you have follow-on comments post reply in the usual way...you'll not see anything straight away but I'll deal with them as quickly as I can alongside Rod Carr (and other members of his team) and we'll get through as much as we can in the two hours.

The forum will stay live afterwards for everyone to be able to review the comments.

Judging by the response already there's going to be some Qs and comments hanging over; will let you know what happens with those after the session.

All a bit experimental for us so should prove interesting - will try to make it so for everyone else too.

Think I\'m missing something here...

When I look at this RYA Question Time forum, all I see is a post about "Forum rules". Where are the questions? Are there any questions?
