Have tried PBO forum but answers not what I was exactly looking for. I have a rusted galvanised mild steel centreboard stuck it looks by galvanic corrosion in the mouth of the cast iron keel. Can anyone recommend a chemical solution which will go a long way to clearing this. Both are dropped from the hull but only to ground and space for swinging a sledge is limited. This is the turning point of 10 months hard clearing with a saw from inside the centreboard case and is the last hurdle before I can reassemble and therefore I am anxious to start as I may get it in the water this year. rgds

As you have removed the whole rusted assembly from the boat, you will be able to heat up the rusted parts with a blowtorch or oxy set. When you feel that you have it good and hot, quench it with a hose or bucket of water. The water will turn to steam quite explosively, and will dislodge the rust in the process. It may have to be repeated if the rust is particularly thick. When freed, the mild steel plate may not appear to have lost very much metal at all, as steel when it rusts expands something like 8 times. The cast iron will have contributed very little to the rusting problem. Obviously, you will get the plate galvanised before you replace it.
Peter.
