Can anyone tell me where I might source a complete set of rudder Gudgeons and pintles for a Ruffian 23. Some low life has stolen the rudder from a lady's boat in the boatyard.. One helpful person can make her a rudder, I'm truing to find the fittings for her.

Hopefully you have some photos from which to take approximate (scale) measurements compared with the other parts of the transom. I wonder why both the pintles and gudgeons are missing, surely the rudder only had one sort attached?

I lost a rudder in a swing situation and had to make a replacement from rough scale dimensions taken from photos, and the ergonomics of the height of the tiller. I had the welder/sheet metal man, recommended by the local boat shop, make me the gudgeons and the long arms to go on the rudder. I just gave him the dimension of the pins, and the length & width of the rudder and we discussed it from there.

Ruffian Rudder

Thanks Barnaclephil, The thieves cut off the fitting where the could not unscrew them!! Pretty determined to take it! I have found another Ruffian 23 and have measured and photographed it for the owner. I was wondering if there was a specific supplier for the gudgeons and pintles those boats. Agree I could get the local man to make some up.. Thanks

Great boat you have there. As I recall They were a Billy Brown Design built originally by Shorts in Belfast. B J Marine later took over the moulds and produced some, so if you contact Bernard Gallagher at B J Marine he may know a supplier I think the moulds then went to somewhere in Kerry where one or two were produced cant remember by who but you might be able to track them down.
There are fleets in Dun Laoighre so they also may be a good source of info.
If you are in The Dublin area pm me I have a Stainless steel fabricator who refurbished my rudder fittings and he might be able to help you.

I understood that they were originally built at Portaferry.

One of the aspects I liked very much was they only had one central genoa sheet winch. After all why does one need two? You never use both at the same time.

In Belfast everyone knew some one who could get nearly everything made in Shorts or in H&W but the Ruffians came from South Down, the first few were made in a cow shed. I went with friends in about 72 to collect a bare hull for fitting out at home, a year later we took it back to there to get the keel and rudder bolted on before taking it for launching. There are still fleets racing in Carrickfergus and Dun Laoghaire and until recently in Hong Kong, one of the best production quarter tonners.
There may be similar production rudder fittings still available but I suspect it will be easier to have them made.
