I have been informed by my surveyor that the rudder bearings on my UFO31 need replacing. Has any one done this and if so have you any tips?
Thanks
Andy
Did this on my sabre 27 last year. took the skeg shoe off, took it along to a local precision engineer. (the bearing is an insert that is press-fitted into the shoe). He pointed me to a non-feerous merchant, from whence an appropriate lump of bronze was procured, and given to the engineer. Few days later it was done - £15 labour plus a few fine ales, think about £12 for the bronze. easy peasy.
That might help, but you may need to provide a bit more detail unless a UFO expert is in the house...
Difficult to advise without knowing what design of bearing. Advice to use Delrin is good if it is plain bearings, but it could also be other kinds of bearings including bronze.
Only way to find out is to either get access to the original drawings or drop the rudder. If it has a skeg there will be a bearing in that. Should be obvious when you clean off the AF and a bearing in the tube going up through the boat.
