Sorry for this old chestnut, but has anyone been brave enough to repack their stern gland with one continuous length of packing instaed of the fiddly three or four rings all cut to lenght!! and then alternating the joints?

if you spiral the packing it won't be compressed evenly when tightening the gland so is much more likely to leak.

The water will get in along the spiral, hydrostatic forces, capillary action , Murphy's Law and a load of other physics will all apply if you do it that way, and it will leak I promise you.
