In case anyone is thinking or a trip to Bute ... the scruffy old pontoons in the outer harbour have been removed completely, so there is a lot less capacity then before. Going by the Bute Berthing Company website its because some work is being carried out and, typically of anything to do with Argyll and Bute Council, has run into problems.

The single pontoon at the north end of the pier (the original visitor one) is still there but I think it's completely out of use. It looks derelict.

Port Bannatyne marina is very full, but as usual almost all of A pontoon is kept for visitors. I wouldn't bet on getting a place after mid-afternoon at weekends, though.

The last time I landed at the north pontoon I was in the tender and the boat was at anchor. Unfortunately although the pontoon was there, there was no access between the pontoon and the land as the bridge gate was impassable.

If something's being done well or efficiently it's probably not being done by A&BC, even when they aren't ignoring their elected representatives on the subject of H&S.

The joy of a Scottish welcome.

Apart from the amazing Victorian edifice why visit?
Because Rothesay has plenty of shops if you need stores, including a medium-size Co-Op a minute from the pontoons and a big one five minutes' walk away? Because it has a good castle and a nice swimming pool? Because the Round Bute open-topped bus tour is good fun? Because Mountstewrt House is interesting if you are into tasteless Victorian vulgarity? Because in conjunction with the Ferry to Wemyss Bas and train to Glasgow it's a convenient place for a crew change?

Bute also has stunning scenery and great sandy beaches.

The inner harbour marina is fully operational and during the week normally plenty spaces. Different story at the weekend if the forecast is good as it will be busy.

Port Bannatyne is the same and the forecast dictates how busy it will be.
