RNLI and stay at home lockdown

The RNLI don't. We use a bag/valve/mask, with oxygen.
Thats what I thought---a bag/mask with O2 if available and without O2 if not. I did a few MN courses in the 70s and mouth to mouth was part of it but as of the mid 80s it certainly was frowned upon. These days it is expressly forbidden in any kind of professional circumstaces and I would have thought the same in the voluntary sector.

The general advice is to use equipment if immediately available... otherwise saving lives is more important. That's current British Army policy. The medic usually carries a mask of some kind to do the mouth to mouth, but Oxygen is a bit of a luxury...

If for any reason we didn't have kit available we'd do chest compressions only.

But that's far more likely to happen if I ended up doing CPR outside the RNLI. All our resus kit, with the oxygen, is always carried aboard the boat.

Historical note! I can remember two other methods of artificial respiration. No longer taught, probably because they didn't work very well.

Corrected for accuracy. ;-)

For Civ Div this is the current line

"Where possible, it is recommended that you do not perform rescue breaths or mouth-to-mouth ventilation; perform chest compressions only. Resuscitation Council (UK) Guidelines 2010 for Basic Life Support state that studies have shown that compression-only CPR may be as effective as combined ventilation and compression in the first few minutes after non-asphyxial arrest (cardiac arrest due to lack of oxygen).

If a decision is made to perform mouth-to-mouth ventilation in asphyxial arrest, use a resuscitation face shield where available.

Should you have given mouth-to-mouth ventilation there are no additional actions to be taken other than to monitor yourself for symptoms of possible COVID-19 over the following 14 days"

"Excellent idea". Let's divert PPE away from the NHS to allow yachtsmen to resume their pastime - the NHS staff can just die.
Next silly suggestion please.

The RNLI are rescuing people right now - do you think that RNLI crews should conduct rescues without PPE or leave silly people to drown ??

Slightly over dramatic , and unfounded, and it is not a past time it can also be mentally stimulating , exercise, sunlight for vitamin D production to help immune responses, with the absolutely minimal contact with other people ,
I have a guy on my wild camping forum on FB and has a letter from their therapist saying to the police that he can go out and fish on the banks of canals and rivers etc, as this is part of his mental health care plan that allows him to reduce medication and get to recovery,
Silly statements about killing people because we go sailing is rumour spreading at its worst if fear is driving you to post these comments may I suggest to read some facts and let sensible people follow the guidelines held by the government , sailing is not banned , getting to your marina is not banned , the marinas are closed , voluntary the HB's are using there own rules mainly from councils, but if you can get to your boat on a mooring pretty close by and go sailing , good for you, and scorn on those that object

Well might state that its the lack of PPI thats the real issue, surely ?

Those who blindly followed the Business ideology of 'Just in Time' plus, 'we can always but from abroad' plus many other Business ideologys that have at last, hopefully beed placed in the Dustbin; the mantra that China can and does sell them far cheaper than we can make them, so we can save a lota money, then if that fails we can buy through that EU, them are our friends, eh ?

So we have absolutely no need to make provision to produce our Countrys own PPI caus we are well covered in that respect, I understand !

Yes them Bstds that ran our country that way for years and years now, should hang their heads in shame !

Re the RNLI well they should have done their own H&S risk assesments, and so made contingeny plans for an Epidemic or similar, so who in the RNLI will put their hands up and admit that they have been asleep on the tasks in hand ?

I was actually replying to Saltaire and messed up the quote selection. The bit between "Excellent idea and the funny face was taken from his response

Its noticable that the two divers concerned are from tourist areas that keep telling the rest of us to stay out and not overload their heathcare systems !
