Have we covered the unspeakable faux-pax, a perfectly servicable sailing vessel calling the RNLI, because she has lost engine power? Any Blue Ensign chaps, reach for your fountain pens.

Are boats inevitably female? Are there transgender boats? And if not why not? (And if so, how can you tell?) ;)

You can tell because dysphoric boats go out of their way to tell binary boats (of either sex) that they're inadequately fluid. You'll also see them in boatyards messing with (or should that be 'in'?) the heads of younger boats. For a fuller appreciation of the subtleties you'd need to read a newspaper whose name begins with G (or, on a Sunday, O, which by the way used to know what nautical really meant), or just ask one of the three remaining listeners of Radio 4...

What is a 'sailboat' anyway?

Pull yourself together and get your terminology right, this isn't Facebook.

As is "I have bought a boat. How do I sail it, and what are these pieces of white cloth?".

Tricky question:

First up, white sails are deeply offensive relics from the UK's Imperial Past. Black sails are more in tune with the times and frankly much cooler :)

That said, dressing a Nordic vessel like a Hallberg-Rassy up in carbon sails is worse, fantasmically Minstrel-like, blacking-up worse, in fact

So you should sport a diverse mix of sails: perhaps a white main and a carbon jib? Come to think of it, associating the word main with white can be problematic, so perhaps a carbon main, white jib, and a yellow spinnaker

But be careful, while you can call your white sail 'white' and your black sail 'black', you mustn't ever call your yellow sail 'yellow'! 'Bee coloured' might be more appropriate ?

Come to think of it, it might be easier to sell-up and buy a Nordhavn!
