IPA, not the beer, isopropyl alcohol. Or contact cleaner which is mostly IPA. Or the sticky label remover spray. And as suggested before WD40 seems to be good at removing sticky stuff. But is it really mostly white spirit? I think it has more lubrication than that.

I've heard it suggested that it's fish oil....

I usually start with alcohol (perhaps meths? "alcohol a brulée" in French) and only if that does not work move on to acetone.

As with all jobs like this, start with the least aggressive chemical (water, soap, white spirits, alcohol, acetone, napalm) and work up.

I recently did this exact same job and used white spirit on a bit of towel and some elbow grease.

For removing tape residue from fibreglass and similar surfaces I use something which is always on board... diesel. Applied on a rough rag it has, so far, never failed me.

Well, OK, but I would then remove the diesel, WD40, white spirit or whatever with detergent after you've removed he glue.

Yes, if necessary. Personally I use my other general cleaning stand-by... which is to spray on some kitchen de-greaser. (Chante Clair. No connection except that of long time satisfied user).
