They only seize in through lack of maintenance that’s why Volvo say change the bellows every 2 years , it’s quite rare they seize up in fresh water .
EXACTLY, and the way they are fitted, we used to grease everything including all bolt threads with OMC Triple Guard grease, you could take the drive off ten years later! Every thread we assembled, engine or drive was greased or lubricated as required.

The 280 was even worse!
Really :)
Just when you think how could VP make things even worser they produced the 280T
Hours of fun digging out barnycules from under those hard to get at little cavities ...which would only be wasted on actual boating.
You could spend the time watching the shaft boats going up and down the river while you worked out where to get all the bits you needed this time to get your boat back into the water. :)

A jackshaft bearing had collapsed after the bellows replaced the previous year had leaked.
The leg has to come off and the engine moved forward.
The keen leg owner might observe no gap between the hull A/F and the Trilux on the outdrive, also absent is the puddle of rainwater under the boat, much of which would be absorbed by your overalls as you lay on the ground.
All in days work for a "leg" man of course.
The A/F that had been applied was from an era when it would kill anything within 100 yards.

Course there has been vast improvements since then to make basic maintaince of vital engine cooling components so much simpler and therefore more likely to be done.
None of this palaver ?

All heater exchangers are now easy to access and simple to take apart by all accounts.
:)

Threaded bolt, oversize socket to receive the pin. Tighten. If seized still a few taps with a hammer to bolt drew mine out slowly when I first got my boat. Subsequently put them all back correctly lubricated. Or at least I use my trailer hitch grease in a pinch. Personally I would not use a slide hammer on it if avoidable. The thinking being if it is as stuck as you believe brute force could exacerbate the issue, burr, deformation etc.

So far so good

M12 thread bar and heavy duty 3mm washers have proved much more successful than the M10 threaded bar and thin washers which I had tried initially.
The port side leg is off
Good news is no sign of any water ingress within the UJ / bellows area
Quite a challenge but very rewarding to get the job progressed this far . I suspect putting it all back together will be fun.

Tomorrow shopping for a 7mm socket for the inner Jubilee clip on the UJ bellows which appears to have no slot for screwdriver use , plus some more WD40 or the like.
And a good clean up in the inner surfaces of the transom shield area is required now it is exposed by removal of the leg.

Some help getting the leg back on is invaluable.
The help can push the pins back into the holes while you jiggle the leg around.
They can also push on the drive while your hand is inside the bellows trying to get the female UJ splines to align with the male jackshaft splines .
This could involve putting the drive in gear and rotating the U/J via the prop in order to line up the splines.
This will all need to be done by feel of course.

The reason for no screwdriver slot is so you are not tempted to use a screwdriver.

I can see this is going to be fun.
Progress has been slow due to factors like floods, weather , work and Christmas

Next time I will be retired so will arrange for the boat to be out in the warmer months where progress might be more swiftly and certainly more comfortably achieved.

A few more helpful tips regards servicing outdrives .
No1. Get the boat moved down to the "MED".
No2. Put a note on the calendar to remind yourself to ring the the marina "Capitainerie" and get them to contact you when the boat has had all the servicing and maintainance done by the local Volvo Penta dealer and those rather attractive young girls with the worryingly short skirts** have finished valeting the boat both inside and out, plus could they possibly after launch, take it round to the atracadero de combustible and fill it up please.
No3. Find the back entrance to the marina to avoid being spotted by the marina manager who has impressive bill that needs settling.
This also will give you the chance to see if they have actually done any of the work they promised to do.

** You might think this could quite possibly be at Cala D Or. One could not possibly comment. :)
