No. I tried to buy a car alarm that did this, but no-one makes it. One of the big car alarm firms had one in development, but it's some time away. The availability of decent telematics gear is dismal. It's a shame, because prepay mobiles are so cheap we could have SIM cards in everything
I wonder if John Watson is referring to a system where the marina SMSs you, not the boat itself?
There is a firm installing webcams on S.Coast UK marinas, and you pay a fee to look at your boat
GSM enabled car and boat alarms shouldn't be that difficult to find. On a quick search I found a few different products in Sweden, CarGard T70C and Guardialink (www.guardia.se, sorry, not in english afaik).
I believe that it's been around for quite a few years in SA together with positioning - with an amazing recovery rate.
If you have an expensive boat, a unit that can do positioning as well could be useful.
Technically, it's not difficult. There are loads of GSM/SMS based applications out there. My favourite right now is a gate opener that opens on call from specific phonenumbers. (With a handsfree and voice recognition you can in effect open the gate whenever by using a corny line like "Open Sesame!" )
OK, hope at least something of the above is useful.
We have a private sewage pumping station on the estate where I live. We've recently installed a remote Telemetry system that uses SMS. It will send a text message (to up to 10 people) if the pumps fails, if there's a power failure or the if sump level gets too high. I reckon this could easily be adapted for marine use.
The companies name is 'TT Pumps'. Price of the kit is about £800.
