I have been boating for almost two years now and feel I have enough experience to draw a few general conclusions:-

1. On balance from the range of boaters I have come into contact with at sea and in marinas, I have to say that the raggies have the highest number of rude members. I have many raggies as friends so I am not saying all raggies by any means but when it comes to bare faced bad boating manners the raggies have a higher percentage than the stink potters :)

2. The marine industry is by far the worst industry for customer service I have ever encountered. I am witnessing things that I could not imagine ever happening in other industries - the most absurd to date involves a new boat with just 18 hour use that caught fire - alarms were not correctly wired etc and the dealer refuses to do a thing about it! The boat is a right off, there was a full Mayday rescue including kids, a baby and a granny - that is probably going legal now so I better not say too much but it amazing how some walk away.

3. There is no such thing as having completed all the work on a boat - its never ending, no matter how new the boat!

4. Having just has my wind thing installed, I have found that I have been underestimating the wind for two years now- when I thought I was in a 3 I was really in a f4/5 - that means it is pretty well a permanent f4 in the Bristol Channel.

5. logical rules and spending limits that you apply to other things in your life simply do not apply to your boat ... its operates from a different datum.

6. The stern/bow thrusters combination makes boat handling in all tight spots from engines breakdowns to collision avoidance much easier - its a lovely way to cheat and smile as you do it!

7. Having now been out a lot on my boat - there is no doubt about it - she travels faster when fully loaded with fuel/water than when not – that’s almost 3.5 tons of weight help her go faster.

8. Soltron works

9. Corrosion X works

10 Rocker stoppers only work up to about a f3

Those are my observations for today!

Yes I fully support your summary, and the amazing thing is it works at all levels. It doesn't matter whether you have a new 60ft Flybridge, a 30 year old 25ft cruiser, or a 17ft sportsboat, the same points work equally well.

Also size matters....

SWMBO and I went over to Watchet on Saturday Night.

Booked a berth well in advance.

Big F'Line Squaddie turns up unannounced from Swansea and we got booted off to a really crap berth. Wasn't you was it Paul!!!! ;-(

I think your conclusions are good ones for the UK. Must admit I've found the scene very different in the Med. People seem out to have fun and not pretend that they are seasoned sea captains or whatever. Of course we have our fair share of nutters but it doesn't seem to stress anyone out. Probably more opportunity to be a nutter in a power boat so the raggies seem quite gentile.

:) Nope - wasn't me.
There are three big Fairline Squaddies at Swansea and one has gone south for the summer - that leaves two and its wasn't me - I was the other side of channel.

I agree with all points - apart from raggie issue. My observation after entering the hobby with no prejudice leads me to conclude that it depends on the individual. I've met ignorant motor boaters and yachties - helpful friendly yacthies and motorboaters. I'm sure if the ignorant yachties had motorboats, they'd be just as bad.

I agree that its down to the individual - its just that in all my cases were I have experienced poor behaviour it has been raggies. I am sure if you put the same person in a power boat they would be just as bad there.

Most boaters be they power or sail are fine.

Take a Raggie, put him (her) behind the wheel of a Power Boat for the first time and stand back. A strange look draws across their face, eyes become glazed, lips stretch across teeth, muscles grow taut, the shirt rips open as the chest swells, they start beathing heavily as the Adrenalin surges through their bloodstream. They stare fixedly at the water ahead ramming the throttle(s) forward they take off hurling abuse at any other craft that dares cross their path while you lay in a tumbled heap on your cockpit floor clutching at anything for stability in a suddenly violent world.
