red/green ignition lights

can you help? i have a mercedes om 636 engine on which everything works fine. however, the above lights on the dash never go out. charging, either through the alternater or aerogen all seem o.k. i am aware if it aint broke don,nt fix it but...... any help appreciated.

I had a boat with BMW engine that was the same. Apparently when it had been rewire just before I bought it the elctrician thought it best to have the lights on while the engine was in operation so when you saw a light go off you had a problem. His thinking was that in daylight it is easier to see a light off that you expect to be on. Perhaps yours is wired in a similar way?
