Indeed, Outstanding pic.

I think i know the answer to this, but is that for real?
Whats the story behind it?

Yep absolutely real. Only manipulation is sharpening for the reduced size.

I'd just bought a rather nice new lens and flashgun. Went out to the pier at Santa Cruz. The pelican was sitting on a post. Ooh lovely, I'll take a pic says I. The pre-focusing flashes startled him, he launched off and I panned with him and got this one. The effect is due to the camera being in aperture priority mode. It takes a pic but tries to expose it correctly, and fires the flash for the foreground, so the picture ends up with a frozen image due to the flash and a blurred one due to the long exposure.

Thanks for the interest!

This one landed on the spray hood, went to sleep, woke up, had a poo and flew off!

This one stayed on the boat from Mid Channel to Gosport, surely that's outside assistance?

Must have been some cross channel pigeon racing going on as 3 or 4 other boats reported passengers
