Radar scanner stolen. What now skipper?

Ah - see from this you are after a 4kw. Haven't had chance to check mine but from recollection pretty certain it is 2kw (and from sailboat so cable may not suit - not that I understand why but the electronics guy was trying to.explain in connection with the 10m cable that came bundled with the new one). Still, it's going nowhere quickly...

No, that's just the way the conversation has gone. I'm pretty sure I had a 2kw before (although I want to check my doco on the boat to be certain) and I think my first choice would be to simply replace like with like. Failing that, I think a 4kw analogue would make a sensible second choice, with a £5k upgrade to digital a distant third.

Sorry to hear this one. What an effin' nuisance.

C120W is the digital replacement but the Digi' scanner is expensive. It's worth a call to Nick or Chris at EBY. THey are more likely to have analogue scanners that have been upgraded than digital, believe me.

The unit is almost exactly the same in use and if you get any issues over cable shortening affecting impedance etc. A new Ray cable is not the end of the world either.

EBY is a good suggestion, I hadn't thought of that, thanks. I've got a couple of local (Soton) leads to follow up in the next day or two, plus a couple of helpful offers by PM here - and if none of that works out then EBY would be next.

Nick_h does make a very good point, which is that we don't often need the radar in our corner of the Med, and it is certainly true that upgrading the radar was not on my list of jobs for this winter. It's also been helpful to talk to Kcrane earlier today about the current offerings from Raymarine - the wifi control of the mfd is attractive, but I'm not sure I need hd sonar rendering, for example. And getting P4Paul's first-hand experiences of chopping the analogue radar cable is also useful. So like-for-like is the logical choice.

That all said, apparently a C125 MFD will also control a new Fusion 700 audio system... uh-oh!

I have just replaced my SL70c Pathfinder plus depth sounder and analog radar with a new E7 and digi radar etc. all the old stuff works fine and was carefully removed and is about to go on eBay, nothing wrong with it other than I "needed" new toys.

You are welcome to have a look at new install which was done by Aztec and is fab and / or have a look at the old kit / make me an offer on the old kit if I helps with you decision making. Boat is a T34 and I'm v near to RK.

jimmy, all the current gear - garmin, furuno, others- have fusion control from the mfd plus wifi control of mfd ( and thereby of the fusion) from an iPad. Not just raymarine. Just saying, in case you get a better deal on another brand. Garmin own fusion, you'll recall

Jimmy. Little buggers. There is plenty of second hand kit around. Some ideas for new stuff. I bought a c120w ( biggest that will fit a t40) from ebay ( new). Coastal rides were selling c120w cheap a while ago. I also suspect essex ( James Barke) have a heap of garmin stuff that comes off new fairlines that ple want upgraded on delivery.

just on an eBay search. I was pleased with mine. Radar unit was about £1000 as I recall - but that was some 4 years ago and the radar was then quite new, so assume there are second hand ones around now.

I agree with Nick
Radar in the Med gets very little use.
With us, it virtually always goes on but the only time I can think that I needed it this year was when we were trying to dodge a rain storm and we still hit it!!
AIS is another matter - value per pound is much better with AIS.

I did think of posting a suggestion - using a Garmin system with OpenCPN on a PC - IMO it integrates nicely but it doesn't really replicate a proper radar display.
But the software does exist - maybe another reason to switch to Garmin.

I'm with JFM on this - I'd stand back and take a really good look at the whole system - Garmin seems to have the edge these days - and thats coming from a Raymarine man.

I now have Garmin, following years of Raymarine,

The Raymarine stuff worked and once you understood the buttons was OK to use.

Garmin is clever (auto routing) generally simpler to use. The only negatives for me are

- the raymarine chart data had lots of pictures ( gold cartridge) or whatever so we planned our day by looking at the pics! Garmin have few pics ( same gold card)

- on Garmin you cant reset your cross track. So if you go round a ship for example on the Raymarine you just reset and carry on direct to destination. Garmin won't let you do that, you have to follow the original line. If using auto plan you can force it to re plan.

Overall Garmin probably wins.

Certainly auto helms etc.

Yep Garmin wins imho too but the inability to zero the XTE is a PITA. That reminds me to send another email to Garmin asking them to change this. I cannot see why it should be too difficult.

Also with auto-routing I find it cuts too close to headlands, even though I have it set to maximum clearance in the setting manu. I therefore use auto route as a vvv quick method to work out the distance to somewhere, but I don't actually navigate by it usually

I am the same. The headland distance is set to greatest, but it still insists on skimming the rocks.

I have also tried setting the depth higher but as Mallorca has deep water close to shore AND it won't accept an auto route in water less than the minimum that did not work either.

I use it until a turn near land, then use heading mode , then re calculate route and continue. I find setting up routes tricky as you set the end then the ones in the middle, so auto route is generally simpler to use.

Right, got along to the boat this afternoon (via the Tower of London, to see the poppy installation - v powerful). The radome was a Raymarine M92650, which is a 2kw 18" analogue. So - in the first instance, that's what I'm after as a replacement.
