That's good! As the fire happened not long before covid struck, I was worried that it might have been a fatal blow.

The walk from SYH is not for the faint-hearted - it must be 2 miles! I know my small dog thinks it's a bit far for him.

I just measured it, and it's actually about a mile and a half. I think we may have walked across the fields at the end, though, and that lengthens it a bit. My dog also has very short legs, having dachshund blood!

We have often walked it and thought nothing of it, but that was some years ago and we are a little older now. Like all these places, the quality of the food comes and goes. Long ago it was simple stuff such as Ploughman’s lunch or very good Suffolk ham salad. The beer was in barrels at the back of the bar but I imagine that has changed. About twenty years ago I had a dreadful meal. ‘Steak and Kidney Pie’ turned out to be an earthenware pot full of a sort of meat stew and covered with a pale brown substance. I don’t know what it was but it wasn’t pastry. There were chips at the side and a sprig of lettuce. Who eats lettuce with S&K pie? It was a parody thought up by some idiot in an office in Soho probably. Since then I have had a couple of good meals, but not for several years.

Yes, although its a bit less than that along the sea wall but I usually walk back along the road if its dark (still need to take a tourch!)

Many years ago we called there for a drink and lunch, at that time there was a prominent sign outside that read “NO CHILDREN, NO DOGS, NO EUROPEANS”. There were a couple of benches at the front which were the only facilities for families with children. How times have changed!
 
We spent a lovely few nights at SYH last July. Ate in both the lightship and the Ship. Lightship welcomed visiting yachts and the food was “good”, nothing exceptional but certainly enjoyable. Food at the ship was brilliant, probably the best meal we ate during that particular cruise. I believe owned by the same group that owns the Butt & Oyster. All that being said, it was nine months ago, please don’t quote me if your standards are higher than mine or things have changed 🤣
 
Shotley has The Bristol Arms which is perfectly OK. The Shipwreck is open Tuesday to Sunday. You aren't going to get gourmet food but The Butt and Oyster is an easy drive.

You are mistaken about the Shipwreck opening hours:

Wednesday10 am–6 pm
Thursday10 am–6 pm
Friday10 am–8 pm
Saturday10 am–8 pm
Sunday10 am–5 pm
MondayClosed
TuesdayClosed

The harbourside cafe is very nice but only open to mid afternoon and the Ship pub in the village is usually heavily booked in summer so options are limited.
The ideal solution would be to keep a fast RIB there and zip off to the Alma in Harwich when you need a feed.

As a SYH berth holder and a member of the riff-raff I could propose you and you could propose me, Now we just need one more person and £170 each. Crowd funding?

I mostly agree, but the Butt at Pin Mill was occasionally not so good. We learnt that it was always better to order from the Specials menu as some dishes on the printed menu had probably come from Brake Bros, we used to see their truck come down the lane most days. :(
We have only been to the Coach & Horse once since we moved to Woodbridge and had a superb meal with excellent service. Does lack somewhat in the view department though.

Yes indeed. Many years ago I called in with the family on a fine sunny day with intension of sitting outside for lunch.
However I carried my daughter in as a baby to order and some woman behind the bar had a fit, hissing about reading the sign etc.
I wish I had told her to f off but just got them all back in the car and went elsewhere. Totally unnecessary and embarrassing behaviour.
Still, that is water under the bridge and I trust the new landlords would welcome my trade these days.
 
Re Shotley - I don't know if it's still the case, but there used to be (pre-Covid) an arrangement where the woman (forgotten name) who had once ran the Shipwreck (before it went to the dogs) and subsequently taken over a well-liked pub a few miles away (name also forgotten - there's a pattern emerging here!), would come and collect you from Shotley Gate if you were booking a meal and had arranged in advance.

It was the Rose, I have no idea if she is still there and the arrangement is still valid. Not personally used it, on the odd occasion that we overnighted in Shotley we ate in the Shipwreck. It was OK then, but some years ago. The Bristol Arms was also reasonable if you didn’t mind the walk. We only went there from home, Chelmo, a few times.

normally if you express an interest in membership at the bar in the Lightship then a member of the committee will be along or in touch. They are a friendly crowd. Finances and balancing the books are a significant challenge for clubs these days
