I wouldn't be surprised to see the birth of the United Republic of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - or, maybe even the United Republic of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

I think it more likely to be just England and Wales. I think that you should call yourselves "Disunited Republic of Lesser Britain".
I've been trying to find some alternative to "Lesser". Perhaps "Abolishonist" which would make it DRAB. One thing is for sure, it is now inappropriate to use "United" when referring to to GB & NI.

It's somwhat ironic that Posters are saying it's a Day Off but it won't be for the People who have to be there, whether Exhibitors, Caterers and other Support Staff.

The Government have declared it a public holiday, but it is up to individual employers to decide if they wish to grant it as paid holiday (at the employer's expense), unpaid leave, leave decucted from the employee's existing holiday entitlement or simply require attendance (with pay) as normal.

I am a little surprised we are even discussing the matter. People are genuinely mourning the death of a highly respected monarch. The holiday day is intended to allow all those that wish to follow the events can. As a mark of respect the show should indeed close. As should most businesses. I am not a True royalist but will not be having a good day out while the Queens funeral takes place. I hope they give her the biggest send off we can.

I am not a royalist at all, and I will be having a good day out. Not because of the death of a queen, which is a supreme irrelevance to me. (I think her family should be left in peace to mourn her, they have lost a mother, grandmother,etc which deserves some respect and manners.) but because I dont feel grief for people I do not know, so I have absolutely no mourning to do. Its not just the queen, I have no interest in displaying public angst or grief when film stars or pop stars or politicians die either. It all looks a bit silly to me.

As a matter of respect for the Queen, everyone should work an extra 3 Hours on Monday.. The last thing we want is to have a lazy day off that will cost 2 billion pounds

Not sure it’s silly. It’s worth remembering people do really identify with their monarchs and such. Many thousands gave their lives for thier monarch and country. It’s the same arround the world. Quite natural and quite natural to bond with the queen. Mourning the loss is a sign of respect and that is lacking in todays society.
Of course not everyone has to participate but I’d hope everyone would feel some small loss.

Alternatively, rather than relying of the internet jottings of a few old men with an obsession with a particular hobby, they could have realized that a significant number of the staff necessary to keep the show open might wish to be given the chance to watch the funeral.

I'm not going to get in to why we should be a Republic but between 20 and 40% of the population support one. I have complained to the BBC about the lack of balance.

Shows 20% + think we should be a Republic.
I think it's more in Scotland. And only 60% support the Royal Family.

As previously discussed, the staff are probably temps. The “old men” of the forum undoubtedly have pensions. I wonder how many of the boat show staff with no other income and rent to pay would rather be “mourning” unpaid than earning bank holiday rates.
