It looks likely that the Queen's funeral will be on Monday 19th September.

Should the Southampton Boat Show close in respect of the UK's longest reigning monarch funeral?

This thread is due to remembering the funeral of Princess Diana saw virtually everything shut.

The day of the funeral will become a Bank Holiday. Many businesses will close, sporting events and other entertainments will be cancelled, rail and postal strikes will be suspended.

If I were organising the Boat Show, I would close it on that day, as a mark of respect.

I'm with those who despise the media feeding frenzy and all the correspondents outside royal palaces with nothing to say, but saying it at great length, and agree with Daydream believer that the day off may allow more people to attend the Boat Show.

All the same, she has been queen of this nation for most of the time I've been alive, and I think she's done a pretty good job through a time of huge change, so a mark of respect is due to a very special lady. which is why I voted for a minute or two's silence.

For the haters and republicans, no, I don't think she was perfect, just that she had a very difficult job and did it well. If Charles can do as well as head of state, he'll be an asset to the nation. If he can't, I wouldn't be surprised to see the birth of the United Republic of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - or, maybe even the United Republic of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

I think it should close that Day.

It's somwhat ironic that Posters are saying it's a Day Off but it won't be for the People who have to be there, whether Exhibitors, Caterers and other Support Staff.

Personally I suspect, even if it does open, numbers will be well down compared with a normal Show Day. Whether a supporter of Royalty or not, or even not fussed either way its a moment in History and many will want to watch on Television both un the UK and Worldwide.

The world and the country is very different from 1952 when everything closed down and all entertainment was suspended for some while. I think it would be possible for the boat show to continue and make some show of respect, though I can see that a full national day of mourning with all venues shut would be more traditional. It is not something that I feel very strongly about, but for the sake of the future it may be better to take the more extreme measures in order to properly mark the occasion and give the younger people and children something to remember.

I think the 1 minute silence at mid-day is the most fitting option, this way those who wish to show some form of acknowledgement of HM’s passing can, those who don’t can hardly complain about losing one minute of showtime, adopting the WW2 slogan ‘Keep calm and carry on’ provides a degree of respect when combined with the minutes silence.
