I smiled at your varnished table comment :) I always have my cockpit and other teak tables varnished! So much better than teak oil imho :)

Sorry if telling you how to suck eggs but please remember teak oil soaked rags can self ignite, so once used never store them on boat - always put in bin even if it feels a bit wasteful at the time. @jfm Noted on the teak oil & semco rags. The varnish on the table was gloss finish and looked wrong imho. The teak oil I used last time round looked really nice. I’ll post pics once I get it done & convert you to my way of thinking!

Teak decks are getting done from your recommendation on another thread with Semco Cleartone. So the score is 1-1! 😂

Spontaneous / self combustion of various materials including paint thinners, linseed oil, oil-based paints, teak oil, varnish and others and in particular rags soaked in them was a key message in fire prevention training when I was in the RN. Once saw it happening in a small compartment just beneath the foc'sle on a Type 42 - we were in the tropics and saw the rag smoldering. It went over the side fairly swiftly, this being in the days when ditching gash over the side was the done thing.

Lots of youtubes on this. Happened to me but caught it in time. Fast-click through these youtubes because they are painfully slow/verbal diarrhoea-ish.
This definitely happens with Semco, not just normal linseed oil.

The half empty tin is ok. Put the lid on and store as long as you want.

The fire only happens with rags that are damp with the stuff, and that are insulated. The damp stuff in the rags oxidises, which is a mildly exothermic reaction. If you insulate the rags enough to contain the heat, then the semco/oil can get hot enough to ignite the rags. The rags are the fuel for the fire, not the semco or linseed oil itself.

If you keep rags spread out they cool in the air, but if you (say) stuff them into a sack so that the ones in the centre are well insulated, you get high temperatures then fire.

This can all happen in slow motion. I had some rags that were last used with semco 4 months previously, and then in a tidying up session 4 months after that last use used they were folded up and put in a plastic box on a shelf, and then insulating things were put on top of that box. There were no more than 2 handkerchiefs worth of rags involved. The rags set on fire after about 2-3 days stored like that, as the temperature rose incredibly slowly. No big harm done, just a small ball of fire and melted plastic box, but obviously it could be much worse on a boat or if more rags were involved.
 
We had the new cockpit covers delivered by Flexicovers fitter yesterday. Unfortunately the fitter didn’t take the correct fittings. Disappointing for a company that feels like a professional outfit & works directly with the factory. Especially when they are reassuringly expensive. Fitting alone was £600+. Covers were 4K+.

Spoke to the MD, and received a professional email with an apology. So I guess at least they acknowledge that they got things wrong.

Wow that’s almost unbelievable. Hopefully you’ll get it sorted.
 
Covers are being sent by courier to me at my home address. So rather than going back and checking the fitting, they expect everything to be ok when I fit them myself. Not impressed and was too late to stop the courier. Update to follow next week when I fit the covers.

I agree that high gloss on tables isn't great unless in the right context. I generally choose 20% gloss on exterior furniture varnish.

At that gloss level, spray varnish and freshly oiled pretty much look the same, ie beautiful. But in the sun it's a nightmare maintaining an oiled finish and you need to do it almost weekly. I have exterior cupboard doors on bar units/a few table tops/deck furniture all made from teak, and it would be a full time job with the oil if this were not varnished so I'm not sure you're ging to convert me :) . Stunning vessel. Your knowledge on this stuff is astounding. Clearly from a professional career in banking or legal, where did you learn all this engineering knowledge?
 
Covers received at home last week. Opened up the packaging to discover the turn buckles for self fitting on the boat. Now these turn buckles have two screws on each, no screws! Looks like I now have to find suitable new screws to use. Such a little thing but a pain nevertheless.

Surely they should include the screws? Perhaps another oversight?

Loading tomorrow at 0830. Coast 2 coast are arriving tonight for a sleep over then loading at 0830.

Tried to upload pictures of the teak renovation but getting a server side error.
