We are looking at a couple of V48’s this weekend. Any pointers of known issues with this model?

This would be my first IPS boat, previous boats were 440 on shafts, P43 on shafts & current V39 on legs.

Appreciate any advice while looking over these boats and anything that we should look out for

Thanks
G

Without going into great detail you have 2 woes with the D6 engine and the IPS , basically you could need very deep pockets when they go wrong . Plenty of info on this forum about engines and IPS drives . A shame because the V 48 is a great boat .

Thanks all. All noted on the IPS & D6’s. We’ve made an offer which is now accepted, subject of course to survey & sea trial. Just about to instruct the survey and also the Volvo dealer to perform checks on engines etc. Hopefully get that instructed tomorrow once I get sight of the broker agreement & a few other documents to satisfy the handing over of the deposit.

Quick update, that’s the surveyor, engineer & lift all booked for the 16th December. Ive now also seen sight of service history, first 3 services were by Volvo dealer, all others by a local engineer. Did a bit of research on the local engineer and appears to be a well known chap with good recommendation’s etc.

Although I would prefer full Volvo history, I’m relatively comfortable with this. In any event the engineers on the sea trial and inspections should pick up anything of concern. Hoping that all the checks pass mustard on the day.

I’ll update once we get through the next steps.

With aged IPS it’s a bit like playing Russian roulette. I doesn’t matter who ( official VP or Indy agent ) who spins the chamber with one round in it .Stress aged .New is a ok risk in my book as the chamber financially is blank .

Go and check out the Volvo IPS System ... great and easy to drive, fun with the joystcks - like playing on a video game. But also check the costs for IPS service and the regular maintenance !!! And I hope, you will never run into some real troubles and the horror of replacing a pod with defect steering hydraulic or water intake or even a broken one - the bill will be around 35k ...

Not really that much to look at , check the oil condition and not from the dipstick, remove the drain plug when it’s lifted , drain an amount off to check as the water will be at the bottom of the casing , check the structure , check the props and shafts , check shafts for oscillation , the Clamp ring for corrosion , plug in vodia and read the clutch pack pressures and test operation when it’s hot after a run . Most important is the service history . There you go that’s what I do on one . V48 is what I’d call a dry engine bay , some boats are designed to hold bilge water around the drives and that’s where the corrosion problems start .
Thanks for this, I’ve taken note and will get the engineer to check the oil from the leg when lifted & all other items.

I only was in the engine room for a few minutes, was dry & looked quite clean. No rust or dirty water runs etc so hoping all good. Survey & sea trial next Monday so looking forward to that.

Traveled down to Heathrow, rented a car and made my way to Bournemouth to stay overnight. No dramas, stayed at the Hilton which was a nice hotel near a good selection of bars & restaurants etc. got up early and made the drive to Portland. Survey we t well with boat lifted at 1030, bang on time. Engineers found some rope wrapped round starboard drive, removed the props and some potential damage to seals, nothing can be seen but best practice would be to replace the seals, pressure test etc. hi/lo malfunction on the day so that will need to be looked at as well. Looks like the high power switch is not activating a solenoid. Teak deck need a little TLC, so we plan to get quotes for all and instruct in due course.

Everything else working great so looks like a good boat.

Post pics later.

Thanks. We’ve looked after her & been in fresh the last few years. Happy to give you a personal tour if you fancy a trip north and can squeeze a bit more on the budget. If you call JB, he will give you my mobile & we can arrange.

So survey negotiations are all complete. Seller completing some remedial works, not quite as much as I had hoped but life is all about compromise and overall I’m happy with the final negotiation. We will complete end of February.

A list of works that I want done before we truck her to her new berth has been given to the broker to get priced up. List includes, new carpets, anchor/engine/aft deck cameras, engine monitoring upgrade, new blinds, new mirrors, gel repairs, teak deck renovation, extra power sockets, USB C outlets, engines/ genny/IPS/platform/sunroof/AC/eber full services, anti foul & new LED Aft Sign.

Also need to swap the salt water anodes to Magnesium for fresh water use. How does someone select these? Any recommendations on a good quality provider that can quote me based on the model of the boat?
