Anyone done this? I've got a couple of bits of chromed 3mm thick mild steel plate that look shabby. I'm not interested in paying the horrendous cost of re-chroming so I'm considering the following:

Clean up with a sanding flap wheel to remove as much chrome as practical
Spray with zinc primer, leave to dry and then heat in a cool (100C?) oven for 20 to 30 mins to hard dry.
Coat with white Hammerite.

The few pieces I'm thinking of doing don't have any work to do, so abrasion not a problem. This is more of a tidy up job.

What does the panel think?

You prety much have it. The 'key' is to make sure you get a good one. Decrease/clean it. Rub it down with 80/60 grit sand paper. Grind out any rust or pitting and repair this with filler. Clean and decrease again. Then some sort of etch primer. To fill the deep scratches from the sanding you will need to use a high build primer preferably two pack. Leave it for a day or two to allow for sinkage rub down and paint. If you are useing hamerite and not woried about the finish then you could probably skip the high build primer.

Why not simply use Hammerite special metal primer ? I did similar on the throttle mount for my last sailing boat, topped off with black Hammerite, lasted for the two years before i sold it like new, and it got some fair wear and tear in its normal use.
