Premier acquires Boatfolk

Partly the existence of dining facilities depends not just on crew structure (family/lads/retirees etc) but also what’s around by way of culinary completion . Hence you could probably berth at Lym YH say and not be overly concerned at whether there is space at onsite dining facility . With the lovely views etc always pleasant there and plenty of reasonable choices in town or pubs. If at Portland however the local choices more limited (yes I know there are some ) but given size of site it cannot be impossible to offer basic fare along lines of Cote or Prezzo,giggling squid etc - . In Weymouth there are at least a few decent places in town. Likewise in places like Yarmouth or cowes. Even Ocean village has a reasonable selection of places to venture. Haslar was dire but as said Maria’s return has at least led to someone running the eateries in a customer centric manner which are on site. I recall those at Clarence are not too bad either and of course Gosport has Gunwharf to offer more variety if the town choices dot attract but Pebbles on beach isn’t bad . At Bembridge if Pizza doesn’t attract it’s a short journey to the Old Fort at Seaview although the Birdham hotel has improved recently under the new owners.

One thing that Haslar and Gosport Marinas offer is easy access to Gosport with plenty of eateries, both eat in and take out. I think the only Michelin guide they would attract is for used tyres. However there is a decent Chinese and chippy near the ferry terminal. 10 mins walk for me, and I’m very happy eating on board.

The Great Wall is one of the greatest sailors' restaurants on the South Coast - 2 hours to eat as much as you can whilst quaffing white wine from a vase. Our crews love the place, followed by a trip to Emma's.
 
There was once a small guide to Solent based eateries rather outdated now but think something the size of Wight Hazards- as said there are some stalwarts eg the China wall in Gosport or the castle tavern which might not appeal to those crew more accustomed to Cote or blancs brasserie fayre but if new to Gosport certainly an experience which a visiting foreign yachts person might enjoy. We don’t tend to eat that much in Gosport as our home port but the pub at Hardway is worth a mention plus the cocked hat which seems to have a large locall following.
 
This will mean that you can berth your boat overnight for free at any of the newly acquired marinas as well providing you take a yearly berth at a Premier Marina, I was told from an employee at Chichester.
 
An 'interesting' development (or lack of development) here in Bangor NI and I'm curious to what people's thoughts are? Obviously Bangor is included with the Boatfolk marinas taken over by Premier, but the management deal with Boatfolk in Bangor expires this April 1st.
Apparently a 2 1/2 year tender was agreed with Premier/Boatfolk in November and due to be signed in January. However, as it stands it appears this may not have been finalised and as of March 5th, there has been no announcement of what the fees will for 2026-27 starting in just 3 or so weeks time.

Purely casual speculation here, but I wonder if Premier are pushing for some last minute terms alterations or if they don't intend to take on the tender from April 1st and subsequently offload Bangor..

I'm genuinely curious of people's thoughts on this one.
 
I don't know the answer specifically as it relates to Bangor, however, I do know that the migration of the Boat folk marinas into the Premier Marina brand is being done gradually, one at a time, the most recent being Weymouth. So one possibility is that Bangor will be done later in the process, and it may well be that the timing is linked to the timing of the.

Or it may indeed be that there is no intention to take Bangor on. I certainly don't know the answer to that question!

It's a curious one. I see they've done Portland, Weymouth, Haslar and East Cowes now, so Boatfolk is down to 7..
But in the meantime it's a bit of a pain for berthholders that 3 weeks from contract time and no-one knows the rates yet..
 
Bangor question might be too sensitive for the manager of that marina to answer but if I was there I would e mail him(or her even) That’s what we do at Haslar if we have any questions 😀
I'm with you.. Approaches on that front have been made but allegedly the marina are as in the dark as us lowly boat owners.
 
I heard that Premier have laid off all the staff that operated the lift out and boatyard at Haslar , one of my clients had booked a lift out to be told it was cancelled and they had to seek alternative yards to be lifted out , so they are making people redundant.

Thanks Paul. Some people I chat to seem to think that because Premier is financed by the Welcome Trust, that they'll be some kind of cozy outfit. My angle is their focus is on profit like any other and they'll be just as mercenary when it comes to areas that don't suit their business objectives..

If you was not profit driven , you would not have a boat.
