Pete,

I may never have attended this rally, but I've been across the Channel 24 + times at last count; I wasn't advising anyone to do anything, just explaining why I don't fancy September.

Jings , what month do you prefer?

I've actually had some of my best crossings in December and a friggin uncomfortable one in June. Its Britain, its the sea. If you're that rigid I'm surprised you ever exit the entrance to Poole!

We appreciate that for those with a smaller boat the weather is a major consideration thats why we pick neap weekends so that the waves with a wind over tide situation are likely to be least.

There is no deposit and no obligation to attend as finally every skipper and crew must make their own decision on finally whether to go knowing their boat, experience and forecast weather.

Who's being rigid ?

I can say what I do and don't feel like, doesn't mean it's cast in stone or anyone else has to do anything about it !

In answer to your 'Jings', I'd reckon May a good bet.

December is usually calm, in fact I remember when I used to race dinghies every winter it was usually calm late November - mid late February, with very windy bits before and after which some people rightly or wrongly call the equinoctal gales.

BTW I'm reasonably adept at poking my nose out of Poole entrance, I have to, to get home to Chichester ! :)

December is usually calm,

Is it indeed? I'll bear that in mind.

Maybe best for Sailfree to start another thread with a poll on it for the September trip and you can maybe organise another one to suit yourself and stay out of the September thread?

Jimi,

I know you have a reputation to uphold but try to keep your hair on.

I made one comment and that would have been that, but a few people inc you either think I'm trying to subvert things which I'm not, or ask me questions like you did, now you're whinging about me answering !

Thats not what you said at the pontoon party.;)

Now that is not true. It as just that a couple of people were looking like they had drunk too much (with the morning wine tasting session!) and looked like they were going to be sick and were on my boat! All I said was were is Fireball's boat when you need it!!

See - I just missed Fireball's boat not being alongside mine to share the pontoon party guests!

I would prefer the earlier weekend, all things being equeal and can`t beat Cherbourg as a destination

Just to be clear. I inherited arranging this cruise from the much respected and loved TomE, by default as I assisted in the admin on the last year that he arranged it. Unless Cherbourg proves impossible or September has consistent bad weather over a number of years I don't intend changing a thing.

I have added the afternoon drinks and nibbles pontoon gathering and last year a free wine tasting in the morning that seemed to go down well (discount also on all wine Formites bought).

Many make other suggestions eg different dates or destinations and I am happy to support these and would be happy to join them in any alternative events but I, with the assistance of Fergus, will arrange one in September to Cherbourg and be happy to encourage newbees and others to join us by encourage a buddy system for first time X channel and a crew wanted/available thread.

I don't want to be closed to suggestions to improve the event but unfortunately on this occasion I was only posting to seek input from others on the preferred date in September and other unsolicited suggestions have possibly caused some confusion.

For the avoidance of doubt it will be September (at present the early weekend is favourite) and the destination is Cherbourg.

I am happy for others to arrange further additional cruises and may try to join them myself.

Gosh! and there's people thinking you were a professional tour operator with EU backing and time off work to organise the event with the blessing of your employer. What a disappointment!

Sept to Cherbourg it is then.:D
