Re: Fatal flaw in your plan.

Would i not take the torch in the dingy with me, and point at the shore on ocassions to see that i'm still heading in the right direction??

As for goggles for the mutt, I think you mean something like this!!

Re: Some Good Advice

I sell the most expensive you can buy, and even with my special Scotsman discount I don't expect you'll buy off me, so here's what I think.

First of all they are too bright to walk the dog with, your mag lite's a much better solution. Second, none of them are waterproof, so left in the bottom of the dinghy water can get easily in through the charger hole. Thirdly, users should be aware that though they may aid visibility they also cause total loss of visibility to anyone working through the moorings on their own night vision. All this is not to say they're not great lights to have aboard because they are, just use for the right purpose and with care.

Finally if you do decide to buy, I believe choosing a 12v unit with the lowest power available is the right choice. The really high output ones have a kind of corona around the bezel that makes being close to the lamp uncomfortable.

The Chinese lights don't actually have the power rated on the box, they're just bright torches, but so far as the original US built Nite Trackers are concerned in my view the 500k light is far and away the best, you can't see to the end of the beam anyway and its really tight, but it's 6v. The not so quite so good 1m light is actually the best compromise being a 12v system so it charges quickly and can be used off the ships supply and gives a reasonable time on battery alone. The 1.5m and 2.0m are in my view just marketing the possible, they're not friendly to use and run out of power too quickly.

Small plug. The Nite Tracker beam has both the true power on the box and the reflector is a miracle compared with any of the cheap lights, so the "spot" goes right down the beam where the others are really just bright "floods".

Re: Powerful Torch Please.Rechargeable

16 hours is a mains re-charge time, a 6v light should re-charge in 10 and a 12v light in about 3.

Re: Some Good Advice

Agreed. We have the 1 million CP 12v Nitetracker and it is excellent, holds a charge for plenty long enough (still had charge when left over the winter too). Excellent for picking up moorings, picking your way up an unlit channel etc or even as a steamer scarer. For taking the dog ashore though I would also use a Maglite, horses for courses means the waterproof Maglite for the dog, we have big, medium, small and miniature (Maglites not dogs) to chose from!

Re: Some Good Advice

wouldnt put them inthe bottom of a dighy, I had a cheapo 3m and it rusted at the bottom and broke inside, guess it got damp sometime, that said they are very useful for the fordeck to pick you way, just dont get them refelcting of anything on th boat or you will blind everyone.

1/2 mill is enoughtfor most applications, and the batteries last longer, 3mill is also nice to have.

Dont try to run them of the charger cord, most wont let you anyway .

I'm just back from Makro, where they have 4 different types.
1X 1,000,000 for £4.99 and 3 X 5,000,000 ranging from £8.99 to £12.99.
The 5,000,000 candled powered ones are Huge, and come complete with a shoulder strap cause its like carry a couple of bricks!!! And as its only a small one i've got (Boat), I thought it too be too big.
So i bought the 1,000,000 candle power one for £4.99. I'm hoping it is powerful enough, And at that price if i happen to drop it in the water or break it, or is just plain Crap, then its no great loss. Oh and by the way it came complete with strap and spare bulb/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif.

Thanks all for the input.

Alistair.

Not on any I've looked at - the 12v chargers do not put out all that much current and force charging sealed lead acid will damage the battery. (same for nicads and NiMh)

Re: Powerful Torch Please.Rechargeable

Well I'm no expert but I quote from the LSI technical data and product guide in relation to their 12v product, "to recharge the battery requires 2 hours on DC current", I was being cautious. On the 6v product they list 10-12 hours.

However these LSI Nite Trackers are a different kettle of fish to the ever cheaper ever de-spec'd Chinese lights.

Re: Powerful Torch Please.Rechargeable

I wonder how these Nite Trackers can be 20 times brighter than car headlights when the car headlights use 60w quartz halogen bulbs just like the Nite Tracker!

Is it a technologically interesting way of increasing the light output as it passes through the lens?

Re: Powerful Torch Please.Rechargeable

I think what they mean is that the 60W of light is concentrated into a spot beam rather than spread out as is the case with a car head light. 20 times the power (light intensity ?) seems incredible though, it must be a very narrow beam.

Re: Powerful Torch Please.Rechargeable

Now we are talking LSI/Nite Tracker are a different animal to the £20 chinese jobbies but the thread seems to be cheapo torches.

It is, and on the "deluxe" versions, focusable and the option for 100w bulbs
