Can anyone recommend one of these 1,000,000candle or more Handheld search lights please.
Looking to order online, Also is the rechargeable ones best?

I need to use it as a search light, and also we anchor out overnight a lot now, and last thing at night i usually need to row ashore to take the dog for a Pee before bedding down. Using my small Maglite it doesn't light up the shore line, but the last time we were out with a group of boats, a friend switched on his 1.5m candle torch from his boat while i was rowing ashore, and Blimey i thought the Aliens where landing/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif, It certainly made a difference.

So all recommendations would be much appreciated.

Alistairr.

I buy them from Makro. Cost around £6-£7 including Mains Charger, 12 volt Cigar charger & a spare Halogen Bulb. Not waterproof but I've never had one break on me.

Blimey, I thought 1m was a lot, But these ones with 3.5m candle power, Must be blinding(literally).
But hey good on price.
Jimi, That co. Cybermarket, Are they ok?? There P&P price looks a bit steep though.

Thanks for all the replies so far, Keep em coming.

Cheers

Alistair.

I think the consensus is that 500,000 is the best power, anything above tends to blind the user with reflection.

make sure you keep all the packaging if you buy from b&q or homebase .
I have gone thorough two now both had battery faults(went short circuit)
they are more than happy to change them even after 1 year !

I need something that will light up the shore approx 20m away or so.

I can't see how a 3,500,000candled power torch would blind me when i'm the one using it pointing it at land. Mind you it may blind my wife when i'm on the return journey/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
As you say 500,000 might be better, But is it powerful enough?

Re: Poweful Torch Please.Rechargeable

I am also looking for 500,000 candle torch. Can you plug a rechargeable with a flat battery directly into the 12 volt supply and will it work immediately. If not then I think batteries are safer or a 12volt lamp without batteries. Any comments welcome

Re: Powerful Torch Please.Rechargeable

The problems with most if not all rechargeables is the time taken to recharge (16 hrs), short burn time (20~30 mins) self discharge of the batteries (always flat just when you need it) and if you give them a "top-up" charge the batteries don't last. (does not apply to the sealed lead acid type).

I bought a 12v direct feed 100W halogen with adjustable focus, flood to spot. Runs of boat's batteries so always available, range on spot ~½mile. Bought from my local gun shoppe, intended as an outdoor hunting lamp. ~£25

For use in the tender I bought one like Jimi and Co. are singing the praises off but the one I bought had a drycell carrier that could be inserted instead of the rechargable battery. Bought from Costco ~£15

or you could go for the ultimate <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.divebooty.co.uk/equipment_details.asp?pid=658> waterproof torch </A> /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

<<or you could go for the ultimate waterproof torch >> Not a lot of point unless you are a diver, cause those very powerful divers lights need to have their glass in the water in order to cool them! I have a peli aqua king that is 100,000 and can be used in water as well as out. 8 D Cells with 10 hour life

plus one of those i million candlepower jobbies, and due to the different focus of the beams, there isnt much real difference in range.

why not dig out a bit of heather for the dog to have a pee on the back of the boat, then tip the lot overboard? Or shoot the dog? Then you could use the torch for blinding people, like the other bloke who didn't have a dog -or did you check that it wasn't actually aliens? You can tell if they are aliens cos they don't feel a thing if you whack them with the torch.

The misses thought about a few options like you're suggesting.
If the wee man was to lift his leg on a piece of heather on my bathing platform, i would end up with Yellow gelcoat./forums/images/icons/crazy.gif
Shoot the wee man, Is not an option as far as SWMBO is concerned.
She did concider nappies, but i told if he was wearing nappies, then he won't be allowed on MY boat.
Then we thought about Softwood bung plugs/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif or hose attachment onto the Wee mans little man/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif.
But i guess you are now realising the the easiest way is just to row him ashore.
Oh, and i couldn't tell if it was Aliens or not as hitting them over the head with my Pocket Maglite wouldn't bruise a thing, let alone knock someone out/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif/forums/images/icons/wink.gif.

looks like there is a job lot of 3m c.p. torches doing the rounds. i got mine from trago mills for about £16, it has 2 x 100w headlight bulbs and looks like ET. it has a lead acid 12v battery so recharges from a cig lighter socket.

problem with these huge beasts is that the reflection of the beam from shrouds, guardrails or even a bit of mist totally blinds you. great if you can hold it outboard of everything on a clear night.

Re: Fatal flaw in your plan.

If your rowing the mutt ashore for a pee, you won't be facing the shore. You'll be facing the direction in which you have come from. So what use is a torch but to light up the boat. Also if your rowing how are you going to hold the torch or is the dog very well trained to facilitate this. There again, if the dog is that well trained you could just throw the dog in the dinghy and let it row itself ashore for a pee. Obviously the dog could'nt hold the torch and row at the same time. So my suggestion is. Buy the dog a pair of ex nato night vision goggles, let it row itself ashore and have a pee in stealth mode!
