Powder coating

I have an elderly Blakes cooker with a rusted glazed oven door.

I've considered stripping it and having powder coated.

Anybody any experience?

I've had aluminium engine cam covers powder coated, but they might not get as hot as an oven. I think it's not good for much over 100 degrees C. It was done by one of those alloy wheel refurbishment companies.

I have had wie baskets out of the larder powder coated by a company in Gosport. They were great. However, don't you really want your cooker enamel coated, not powder coated?

Powdercoating cures at about 180 -200C. Overlong at this temp and lighter colours go brown - it burns.

Not suitable for an oven, in fact not really suitable above about 150C

Like most coatings, its the preparation that counts more than the application of the powder. Poor application = lack of adhesion usually.

The rust is on the exterior of the door which, hopefully, is reasonably insulated from the heat inside.

Another technique could be electrophoretic painting which I have some experience of. I would need a "friend" as a batch size of 1 compared with the hundreds previously could be a problem. Unfortunately the "friend" is about to retire! I have had components thus painted in the past and the coating is very hard. One batch was unacceptable and the paint had to be removed. This is achieved by burning off. Unfortunately, the burn temperature is close to the melting point of the aluminium components which had fine features and which "drooped".

I know nothing about enamelling but will research it.

Never had it done, but sometimes referred to a "stove enameling" I think?

Of course! ……and I have some for my log burner. Now that does get hot!

you can get it enamelled. I have a taylors and i had the top re enamelled in the black country. was like new. cost me about 50 quid
