My fresh water tanks are GRP. They have a lid which is flat, and which is also made of GRP. The lid is screwed down with about 50 screws at 50mm centres.

I want to reseal them, 'cos Ive just been inside to clean them.

Problem is, what do I use?

All the silicon sealers Ive looked at in B&Q and in chandlers give warnings about the stuff when "pre cured", but none give any reassurances about it when its "set"

Anybody had any experience? What did you use? Thanks in advance.

Try a piece of the cushioned vinyl floor covering, cut to shape. You will probably pick up an off cut for free from a carpet fitter.

We used a piece as a waterproof gasket when bolting a small mast to the wheelhouse roof. The mast needed to be easily removed when passing low bridges on the French canals. In fifteen years, no water seeped under the mast or gasket. I should imagine it would be just as good to seal the top of your tank.

Good luck
David

Most plumbing shops sell jointing compounds for use on copper pipe drinking water systems. The most common one is called "Fernox LS-X", which comes out of the tube looking like silicone grease but which then cures and hardens into something like rubber.

The silicone sealants are pretty safe when cured - a least as safe as the plasicisers that can leach out of vinyl flooring! Remember, though, not to use a mould resistant one as it'll have fungicides - some of which are mercury based.

Unless you're a live aboard I wouldn't have thought there could be the slightest hint of a doubt of a problem.

Regards

Richard.
