I am thinking of moving into the area from the Midlands. I am single and 35 years old, looking to buy a property with a mooring in this area or perhaps Ocean village, has anyone pros and cons of either.ie as a place to live, moor etc. Thanks

Port Solent:-

Benefits are: Very accesible from M27, lots of Restaurants/pubs, excellent marina and boatyard facilities. I live in the midlands and moor my boat there.

Drawbacks: Motorway noise noticable for some properties. May have to queue to get out of the lock. Bit of a hike through Porstmouth harbour.

Ocean Village: Takes ages to get to from M27. Restaurants seemed a little grotty to me. No lock. Still a fair hike to the Solent.

Have you considered Hythe?

Gosport is getting its act together now with new properties NOW being built with berths - this is since the MOD has released much waterside land. Immediate access to Solent any state of tide. Camper & Nicholson's and Gosport Marina also v. good marinas. Get in quick as I feel Gosport is going to be very popular with boaters and prices will rocket within several years as more and more land is released. Main drawback is A32 into Gosport but routes to the new developments are being constructed.

Thanks pete. Have viewed hythe looking with somewhere with a bit of life to it. Seems a bit remote out there, although i see the advantages on position.

There's quite a few different ones down there - I'll check out who's where and post here later.

Re: Porto Solente

I was in PS for a while and knew a few who lived there. The place is a sensible magnet for non-boaties so it doesn't die during the week, decent road etc communications as above, Tesco around the corner, and "real town" things to do in Portsmouth, one of few suitably grotty mid-northern towns with "life" accidentally finding itself in the South. Only drawback for boaties is that PS is a good w/e destination, and everywhere else is not so smarty to visit on a saturday nite. You can't have it all ways I suppose.

I think Port Solent's a bit of a ghetto. Ocean Vilage is much closer to action in Southampton - and there's more real boating event wise at O.V. If you use Thomas Lewis Way off the M27 Ocean Village isn't bad to get to at all. Also, although you have to go down Southampton Water to get to the Solent, at least you can do it at full speed once you are past Hythe Pier so it's a lot quicker than Port Solent.

Forget Port Solent. The last time I was there I had to wait over 2 hours to get out (Sunday morning 10am). I will not be visiting again. Look elsewhere.

That'll be one less for the lock then!

Secret is to monitor the radio from about 9:00am onwards and book yourself onto the queue so that you can leave at a convenient time.

Colin,

Sounds like you were a bit unlucky. Usually it's not too bad.

However, if it's a Sunday morning, it's sunny, spring tides and low water occurs mid morning forget it! Each lock cycle will take about 20 minutes.

In that case best thing to do is get the boat through the lock at about 9:00am and moor up on the outer waiting pontoon. You can then walk back and enjoy breakfast (Slackwater Jacks is best) at your leisure.

Regards, Peter

Against Gosport> A32 is same road as 50 years ago. Gridlocked morning and evening, due to mass movement of workers to gainfull employment. Mass building of new homes in the Gosport area has not been accompanied by any investment in infrastructure or transport

I have always liked the idea of a boat at the bottom of the garden , but in reality not may people actually use the boat as much as if you lived away from it, you also have to consider the extra costs levied by the agents for use of locks, onsite maintainance etc, so we have shyed away from that idea.

In my opinion as an engineer that works in all 3 mentioned marina villages, here goes.

Hythe, very quiet not much happens there, staff very friendly at marina, properties always seem to gain value quickly.

Ocean village, more happening place, though devopments slow on frontage, better access to sea via s/water as no lock, quite good to get at by road, wider range of properties available and some mooring on leases for sale, so look at buying elsewhere.

Port solent, I work there quite a bit, good road in and out, lots going on, good boating facilities and others close by, long haul to sea, good chandlery, boatyard staff very good, infact a pleasure to work there and deal with, ive never had problems. as said box clever with lock times.

If you want more tranquil, look at housing around rossiters yard at Christchurch.
