I've just given up my subscription to both PBO and YM. Both are fine mags, but even the journos must admit to a duff issue now and then (Kids on Charter? Harness the power of prop walk again?), so I decided my thumbing through at WH Smiths would weed out sufficient editions to compensate for the benefit of the sub. As far as subscriptions go, I happen to know Mrs M has got me one for the New Yorker for Xmas! What a sweetie.

Not strictly true

You might be able to search the rankings but none of the accompanying notes about the findings are available -- for that you needed to read the mag.

We put the rankings online so that readers can re-order them to taste.

Subscribe to YM, but not renewing because I think the quality is going down the drain.

Some recent articles to illustrate the point
1) the one on copper bottom paints that only describes applying it....
2) the inane article in this months (the last of my subscription) mag about some guy crossing the pacific with a radar

Will be going to YW with the occasional PBO.

When I find them over the counter here in Italy. Typically one of these a month:

PBO - most frequently
YM - once every 3 months or so
YW - never
ST - never - doesn't arrive in Italy
Bateaux - highly recommended
Bolina - very occasionally
Fare vela - sometimes, second-hand

Buy YM from newsagents every month (probably ought to subscribe - might drop a hint to the memsahib for Xmas)
Have just "discovered" PBO, now buying most months
YW is way out of my league

Subscribe to Sailing Today - I've a bit of a soft spot for it, as it was the first "big boat" magazine I read when I was a dinghy sailor. I've bought it on and off from issue 1.

Most months:

MBM
YM
MBY
Occasional purchase of CB if there's something that particularly takes my fancy.

No subscription - I usually buy from WH Smug but have noticed recently (and disturbingly) that, whilst you can get the sailing Mags at the Kings Cross Branch, the Mobo titles have vanished. Is this (1) Sinister long-term plot by the Scuttlebutt Mafia, (2) Market research by Smug, indicating that nobody has a mobo in the North East as they are all too poor or (3) Proof that I need a new pair of glasses?

Waterloo branch apparently unaffected by this disturbing phenomenon.

I used to buy off the shelf Yachting Monthly from about 1964 and Classic Boat and The Boatman before it when it first started, and read and re-read them, often months and years after first doing so.

Now, I subscribe to YM and CB (coerced by James Jermain with half bottles of gin one S.I.B.S.) and hardly ever read more than a page or two of either.

Funni'innit?

Just allowed subscription of MBM to lapse - too many same, same floaty caravans
Buy PBO most months, can usually find something of interest
Can't really find a UK mag that floats my boat, so now subscribe to Cruising World.

YW - too rich for my blood, ditto MBY
YM - mostly about the type of boat I dont really want

Disappointed by Nudist Canoeist?

Well, you could always try BareBoating.

(YM subscriber, occasionally read PBO but the practical advice here is better).
