I used to use a breton plotter, which is ok in a sort of medievil way. I now use a chart plotter linked to the auto pilot. This method is idiot prouf!!

Capt. Fields (parallel rules) are fine for use on a nice, flat desk when doing RYA theory courses but Breton-type plotters are far more practical when heaving/bouncing around on the water with limited space and time at your disposal!

imho

The twisily round thiny, you point the arrow to north, with the ruler bit pointing to where ever your going. Then you can read the compass course and draw a line. Some times you work out the deviation and variation right, but the you work out tide drift and wind. If you get all this right and the boat does not bounce about to much, leaving the compass going round in circles. Then you get there. Else like Christifer Kerlumbus you discover Americer!!
