Anyone bought a plb with AIS?
Which brand is good with a long battery life and can the user change the battery in any if then?

What do they cost?

no such product available.

for clarification @PabloPicasso,the term PLB refers to an EPIRB style device working on 406/121.5Mhz as part of the GMDSS.
Strictly speaking the AIS models are not a “PLB” despite their use being to “locate a person” and are not part of GMDSS. Hence I believe the rather short reply to you above. I hope this clarifies in a bit more detail.

In answer to your question though is that I believe the MOBi1 is the most popular device giving both AIS and DSC alerting. The DSC element is programmed through PC software and can be changed as many times as you like so if you move around boats and are on a particular one for a few days/weeks you can set your device to DSC alert the vessel should it be activated in a MOB situation. IIRC no units offer user replacement of the battery.

Hope this helps.

I read some long long time ago that plb devices and ais/dsc would be available in one device "soon". It seemed at the time, as I recall, that there was no technical difficulty in combining all three systems into one device.

As I understand it not a technical issue but a regulatory one as radio and satellite are governed by 2 different regulatory regimes.

Pabko,

It appears you have asked an impossible question, one reason being your desire does not fit the current definitions.

Maybe if you asked a different question - you might find what you need. You might also need to accept some compromises.

I've just checked our local, Australia, manufacturer and they make a PLB with a battery with a 7 year life. If you consider an electronic product with a 7 year life - in 7 years time technology will have forward so far - you will not want tp replace the battery you will want the new technology.

It's not PLB in the usual sense. It's an AIS MOB
………………but much more useful for casualty recovery. Maybe when sailing close offshore and not too far from land, the SAR services will pick up a MOB soon enough to save his life. Out of rapid recovery range, I would much rather effect the rescue myself. At the same time, he/she left on board can issue a mayday which kills both birds.

Yes but to my mind the combination of PLB and MOB would be useful for the singlehanded sailor who goes overboard near traffic where he gets the benefit of local assistance and eventually the full SAR system kicks in.

To be honest though, the single hander who goes overboard is probably doomed anyway which is why I sold my PLB and got an Epirb to replace it. If I'm abandoning to a life raft I would rather have an Epirb. If I go overboard neither a PLB or MOB is likely to change the result.
