I have an Onwa kp-708a chartplotter with built-in AIS.
I currently have it set up to output GPS data to my VHF for DSC.
I have a Yakker WiFi bridge as I want to be able to see AIS targets on Navionics app on phone and tablet.
GPS data is transmitted via nmea 0183 at 4800 baud but AIS data requires a higher speed, 38400.
Do I need a second gps source or am I missing something?

Have a look at the operator's manual, pages 93 and 94. If I understand these pages correctly, page 93 tells you how to output GPS position to equipment such as your VHF using the white and black wires, and page 94 tells you how to output your AIS using the blue and black wires. It also says that the AIS output baud rate is 38400 (regardless of what you have set the baud rate for your position output).

However, I found when wiring my KP-38 to my VHF that the wiring interconnection as described in the manual did not work. Fortunately the ONWA agent (in New Zealand) was very helpful and experimented with his gear, finding the same problem and gave me the solution. Therefore you might have to experiment with different wiring connections to get it working.

Does your phone and/or tablet have it's own built in GPS? My android ones do.

I use Actisense to view NMEA data on my devices inc AIS but have to report that Navionics Boating representation and use of AIS is pretty poor in my opinion.

I'll see if I can get screenshots posted later.

Use the 38400 output (different connections to your radio) connect that to your Yakka and use your navionics app to view ais targets remotely.

The navionics is pretty useless at collision avoidance advice.
I use the very low cost Open CPN which is far better than anything commercially available.
Seen displayed on a 7" display at the helm fitted for less than £100.
Navionics on lower picture.

Not quite sure the question here... you have the Yakker connected to the plotter, yes? Set to 38.4K and you should get everything via the Yakker.

If you're not having luck, consider trying other apps; I recall Navionics being somewhat finicky in that regard.

It will be easier on the device's battery if you can consume that data from the boat instruments. As a bonus you also can pull in wind, depth, and other data. Random screenshot below:

I also found that one wire was incorrectly detailed in instructions .... Alan at Aves let me know ..

I have all data incl AIS transmitted by WiFi ... USB .... NMEA from my NMEA2WiFi unit ... no problem to my other gear .... Guests also can log on and receive all data
